What's happened to Shield Arc

I'm surprised how many missed this post (#11 in this thread), from the hobbyist himself.

That was back in August. He normally posted regularly and that plus hid known medical problems triggered our concern when more months went by. I am kicking myself for not checking sooner, after all he is somewhat of a neighbor.

Good to hear that Carl is on the mend. He is a great guy. I have talked to him a couple of times on the phone a few years ago. Wishing him all the best.

Glad he is doing OK, he always had great advice and was patient with dumb questions. I think of Shield Arc every time I weld something complicated and have to weld upside down or uphill or in a corner.

If all my welds were on a flat surface with a butt joint, I'd be golden, but alas those harder welds really expose my amateur skills. The other day I welded up a smoker box for my grill and that got real complicated as the box began taking shape and closing in.

Don't feel bad even the "self judged" experts have their days in tough spots and money is at stake. Try a horizontal fillet weld on 6" pipe 2" away from a plaster wall using a #6 O/A tip. Back in the day I did 50 of those for a wood framed building HVAC system. Sweated blood over the fire hazard more than the welding. That separates the men from the boys quickly.

Practice makes perfect.

I’m lucky I was close enough to SA to have him teach me a few pointers when I got my MIG. Brought it over one day and in two hours I learned so much. Yes practice afterwards but the instruction was invaluable. First off, I learned I needed cheaters to see the puddle!

Ron, when you get your MIG I want to join you again at SA’s shop for more mentoring!

Yes I too have been a long time from contacting him. Glad that he is mending well. He has been such a great help in furthering my skill set. I still need to get over to see him for my Aluminum Tig lessons. Dragoneggs and Tractor Seabee you two are lucky to be so close.
