to make the best recommendation as far as truck we need a better idea of the actual use for these tasks are for a hobby farmer or a real farmer/rancher. If you have say 5 cows and move them to a summer pasture and back each year that is one thing and completely another if you move large numbers of cattle on a regular basis. Same with the tractor. Is this something you do a few times a year on "homeowner" type of tasks or is this doing regular work hauling your machine for jobs such as bailing hay or brush hog work. If this is just a hobby and you have a few animals as pets on a small acreage you can certainly get away with less truck. If you do this for a living and need somethign that is more dependable you probably need to spend more up front.

In the original post I said I need a truck to safely haul 7500-10,000lbs and is really dependable.

So I guess I will add that I'm hauling something on a weekly to monthly basis possibly, I plan to haul my tractor around in the summer more often for different jobs, not daily.

Distance majority of the time is 1-50 miles.

I'm not looking to "get away" with a lighter truck, I want to safely haul the weight. Frequency of hauling is kinda not relevant. Unless I was hauling far distances daily which I'm not.

Diesels are expensive for what you're wanting to do. It's the little things that eat you up with a diesel on a regular basis. Injectors, turbo, pumps, etc. All of these little fixes can be thousands of dollars. Or, you buy an old 7.3 with 200k and the engine totally gives out and the thing is basically totaled. Like others have mentioned, I'd find a nice Ford V10, 454 big block chevy gasser, or a Dodge V8 or V10. Gas is so nice; they start when it's cold without being plugged in or having glow plugs, etc. They don't need to be warmed up for 20 minutes in the winter. They aren't loud and heavy. If they blow up, it's a couple grand to pop a brand new engine in them. At the weights you're talking, on flat ground, gas is a good way to go. No one wants these bigger gas trucks anymore due to the simple fact that they are not fuel efficient for any projects other than the narrow spectrum of work which you have found yourself in. Fewer and fewer people are farming or working on a small scale. For most small stuff, an F150 works. For big stuff, you want a diesel. So, because of this narrow range of weight you are working in, you can pick up a nice 250/350 gasser with 100k on it for dirt cheap and if you maintain it and go easy on it it'll probably run for 40k more without an overhaul. That's my two cents anyway. When I started out I bought a 94 dodge cummins with 205k to do what you're talking about doing. I got lucky and it ran great and never really let me down... but the starter failed and that was $600... and it leaked oil everywhere and to fix it would have been a heck of a job... and it was so loud I wanted to wear ear plugs when the windows were down... I am shying away from diesels now. I run a Volvo road tractor to haul heavy loads and use gas V10s for route trucks. The Ford V10 has been a good engine for me. Cheap to fix, cheap to maintain, doesn't complain, few issues... plenty of power for 8000lbs towing... late 90s Ford V10s are solid machines... Just my thoughts.... good luck

THere are several 7.3 diesel engines made by International that were in Ford trucks.

Big difference in power between a naturally aspirated IDI and an 03 turbo intercooled Powerstroke
Sorry, I should have added that it is an 03 turbo 7.3.

Other than the 6.4 part...yes way better, 6 speed manual too.

6.4? I can't zoom in that far if it says it on the truck what motor, it's a nice truck but I wouldn't want a crew cab, too long of a truck

Ford SuperDuty F25 4WD LOW MILES No Rust Runs Good

I think that's the type of truck I would buy if I had any money right now, and if the truck wasn't a salvage. Just a simple 3/4-1ton work truck.

I don't think I would want a flat bed but would be open to it.

It's an 08 Powerstroke so it's a 6.4 V8 diesel. Not exactly Navistar/Fords best effort, supposed to be slightly better than a 6.0.

Now you are talking for a cheap hauler...guess salvage title cause it had a fender bender and it is an older truck, not cause it wasn't worth fixing. Guess insurance figured $5000 in repair so they wrote it off.

Looks like a base truck with automatic and ESOF (electric 4x4)

Should be the 5R110 5-speed automatic in an 04, it's a 5.4 and those were rated to tow 7400lb if 3.73, 8900lb in 4.10 axle.

I should stop window shopping for trucks lol, I'm on CL usually everyday to see what pops up, I usually don't buy anything off there unless I practically stole it.

Yeah 4K for a F250 seems like a pretty good price if everything is still true and strait. But I can't swing it for a little while till I pay some other things down or sell stuff. This fall I will look into a bigger truck, I need to make more money lol.

Frequency of hauling is important to some of us. For me it would determine if this task could occasionally be done with an older vehicle versus a newer more dependable truck I get the feeling that this is only for occasional use and only moves a few cows that you keep on a small acreage. Is this your first "hobby farm" setup to be in charge of? I kinda figured it might be from the looks of your chain link fence and questions about towing. How much land do you farm?

Make sure you can get a truck with a salvage title insured. We tried a year ago and the three we called would not touch them. Too much liability.

As was mentioned earlier the 05 and newer V10 f250/f350 are a good truck, more power than the earlier versions, don't blow the spark plugs out, and a 5 speed auto.

Fuel mileage not great, but good tough reliable trucks, and nice ones at that.

Pull what you need to daily;)

We have had a few at work, little maintenance, getting there asses handed to them daily, very tough and reliable.

FYI I have done a fair amount of research on these, This will be my next sit around, till I need to tow, vehicle that is not a piece of crap.

Even the earlier ones are good trucks, but blow plugs out, needing a helicoil, and have a 4 speed auto.

So used, for a keeper...05 or newer.:)

Hey man don't knock the fence lol I was happy with that fence, had to hand pound the T post and bought all the chainlink used on Craigslist. I didn't have a tractor or anything to assist, just man power. I have 3 acres but want to get my hands on another 10-15 acres this spring to rent so I can go up to 10 head of cattle this year.

2016 was my first time with cattle and I started with 3. I use my truck almost daily for odds and ends work.

hauling a heavy load? not as frequent yet but I plan to keep expending yearly.

I didn't know much about cattle when I bought my first one, I just bought one, I already had a small 1/2 acre fenced, I fenced another acre later and got two more head. That was about 11 months ago.

I only pounded the Tpost down 2-3ft if I went back I would have gone down 3-4ft but it's a strong fence and I have never had any cattle get loose yet and I never added a hot wire which originally I was going to. It's 470ft one piece of chainlink. I also would have bought 6ft Tpost instead of 8ft but it all worked out, I was in the fence about $1 a foot.

A 3/4 ton gasser would fit your needs well. I have an '06 Chevrolet 2500HD 4x4 6.0L gas. Rated towing i believe is 10K gooseneck. Good stout engine and drive train. Look at the '04 and newer. More power than the '03's. I move the same weight, as you are wanting to move, on a weekly basis. Have even gone higher. Does good to 10k, whines at 15k and grones above 20k. :).

5R110 5-speed was not available until 2005. 2004 gasser trucks still had the 4R100 4-speed.
