Fordtractor,

I take it your ovh'ing Ford hyd cyls????

OEM Ford used Neofab V rings and phonelic male and female adapters......

I prefer in my repack jobs what Allegheny York calls a HI-LOP V pkg set......the male and female adapters are nylon and the vee packings are neofab/hytrel stacked alternately

http://www.alleghenyyork.com/pdf/vee/packing_sets.pdf

These stand up very well.......

This is exactly what I do. The "cloth" appearing seals are great for high pressure but tend to let a cylinder creep down. So, I'll alternate a rubber one in there somewhere, depending on the height of the stack. Oh, probably isn't rubber, but I don't have my seal catalog in front of me. I use www.herculesus.com. But I also buy from Allegheny-York and have had good luck with them. Hercules makes a much more user friendly catalog.

Oh....so you do not need a seal....you want education about seals....that will take a seal teacher then....read here a pdf from Parker seals

Where did you get these terms "Hytrel, GFN and Neo Fab"....it seems like there is no such info about "GFN".....NeoFab (fabric reinforced Nitrile) is an older material in U-seals, common in pneumatic applications, today most likely replaced with modern materials and other profiles....

Well, yes and no. Yes, I DO need a seal AND I also need an edumacation on the lingo used. The biggest part of doing a new task is learning the lingo and knowing what to ask. I may be mistaken, but the counter help these days isn't as good as the help from the forum. I'd rather learn here in my copious spare time and have a pretty good feel that the right parts will be ordered. I've done it the other way and had wrong parts sent by the helpful online support before!

The links are great, but Fluid Sealing Materials | FlexiCase Rotary Seals | FlexiLip Rotary Seals | Thermo Plastics- Elastomers - Darcoid makes my virus checker bark. I am avoiding that one.

They probably look like these

Well, pretty close, but not quite so beat up! Your link to Allegheny York is informative, I was looking at the web site;

Under 4" O.D. Vee Packing on Power Seal International LLC

Less information, but lower prices too.

Aren't these prices "Per ring" rather than "Per set".....don't let the lower prices thow you off......Some "V Packing" Distributors sell them "Per ring"

Yeah, it's per V. But I can get enough V's, tops and bottoms to do 5-6 cylinders for the price of ONE stack from the nearest hydraulic shop. (phone quote of $65 + shipping as they don't stock "old stuff" + tax + a 40 mile drive)

The rod V seals and tops/bottoms are .39 each with the 3 materials the same price. The cylinder seals and tops/bottoms are .54 each. I'll be buying a few extras to keep on hand too at this price.

After validating that I am a Pro at procrastination, I ordered up a mess of the vee seals and male / female ends. I got enough for 8-10 cylinders from 2" to 3 1/2". Total delivered price was $108 for 215 pieces.

There was some confusion over some parts that are out of stock, but it all got resolved. Sadly, they held the order up for a couple weeks waiting for me. Next time, I phone the order in and validate stock levels FIRST.

Put one cylinder together today, but the stupid air lubricator in the shop blew it's top. Literally, the little drip cap blew off and put a hole in the ceiling drywall. Who would have thought that the well made china stuff from HF would do that?

Oh well. At least I know the seals are nice and the cylinder should be tight for many years to come. Now to replace the lubricator so I can do the other cylinders!

FYI - I called out the blood hounds and searched the swamp (my shop) and located the missing clear dome from the lubricator.

Those crafty Chinese glued the thing in place because it's quite a bit smaller than the threaded opening. I'm sure that's a much higher quality manufacturing method than simply using parts that are sized to the hole :confused2: ... or not:mad:. It looks like rubber cement or whatever they used doesn't hold up well to air tool oil.

So, I cleaned the dome, scraped out the residual glue from the threads on both sides, de-greased it and took a play from the China playbook and epoxied it back in there. Ha! That will show 'em.

Yeah, it's not optimum -- but where am I going to find a correct replacement?:ashamed:
