Used to do most all my own maintenance. Once one gets older and has enough to pay others to do it, one starts keeping them less time. At one time, we had a 1983 240D Benz and a 1996 Tacoma and a 1997 VW Cabrio. Now, we're newer with a (monstrous) 2005 Tacoma and 2010 VW Jetta and a new JD 1025 and don't plan to keep them past 6 or 7 years (will on the Tacoma unless SOMEONE finally gives us a nice, small pickup again, ideally with a turbo diesel engine).

Last year this time I had a '01 F-150 and a '97 Mazda 626, 13.5 yr avg. Finally lost patience with needing transportation and having it not work - I spent more time fixing / arranging alternate transportation than with my family.
Now- '12 Highlander, '13 F-150, so about 1 year now. Love that turn the key and they work feeling, but $$$ was painful.

Autos between spouse and myself are 10 and 15 yrs old which puts us at 12.5 yrs. Too many factors to understand broad generalizations. I'm expecting our cars will be 14 and 17 yrs before a replacements fill our driveway. My neighbor hits me with the new car changeover every 6-12 months. Most recent changes were a Mercedes-AMG gullwing traded in on a Bentley Continental GT and just last week his "dog car" a Cadillac XLR convertible was traded in on a Jaguar XK convertible....he's a car guy.
