Who buys sheep? I know a few folks eat them or is it for wool? Sounds good so far.

42000 chickens. Wow, that's huge.

We wanted a way to justify our tax free card, thought about a few cows or hay. Got in a state WHIP program (wildlife habitat improvement program) and ended up on a cost share program to clear cedar trees, by product was some of the largest trees were big enough to sell to a local mill and so we sold some for lumber.

In the seventies and eighties I sold lambs to the Greek and Jewish communities. I provided excellent meat to a market which appreciated it. I sold about 350 lambs each year that way and sold the rest(about 200) at a local sale barn. I liked getting the premium price for the private sales. Lamb is a good meat to sell. I made good money from them.

Re: What\'s the most profitable way make cash, farming

I was just hoping that someone on here could give me some suggestions on how to make some hard earned money.

I am suggesting from my own experience that you be as diversified as possible. Try several "Niche" areas of farming, all at the same time. Then, after 2-3 years, cull it down to 3 or 4 of the profit makers.--In 1973 and 103 acres, For me it came down to, corn, truck patch, beef cow/calf, farrow to finish hogs, feeder pigs, strawberries,Tobacco,parttime trading farm implements, timber, tame blackberries, hay for use on the farm and sell the extra hay to neighbors and finally my after hours custom work for neighbors paid for all my farm equipment . During this period of time (1973 to 1980) I worked 40-65 hrs per week doing "tool and die" work at Mallory Capacitor and when the kids got older, my wife started public work at a local bank.--Ken Sweet

Ken,

People think if you own a business, then your rolling in money and have it made. But few realize the sacrifice and struggle it takes to become successful, or the amount of work it takes. It's inspirational to read what you went through on your way to owning your own business. Of course, when your doing what you love, then it's not really work, but a way to enjoy your life.

Thanks for the compliment. There are many, many others on the forum that have had and still have similar farm/work experiences and are a inspiration and a source of positive knowledge and reinforcement to me. Re: What\'s the most profitable way make cash, farming

Finally - somebody who knows something about chickens I can ask some advice from (maybe you and Soundguy). I've been trying to get some chickens to live on my place - I've bought chicks every year at the farm store but I've had no luck;

I haven't been able to figure out if I'm planting them too deep or too close together!

rtimgray, make sure you run the tiller BEFORE you plant the chickens. If you till the ground after they are in the ground it will control the weeds, but also takes out the chicken crop too.
