I have read about your project progress with interest. My wife’s family is from Buckley Washington. They now live in Edgewood. I can’t believe how much growth has gone on out your way.

Who buys sheep? To be honest I haven’t started direct marketing of the sheep meat yet. I just load the fat lambs up in the trailer and take them to the local livestock auction. This last year we got over a dollar a pound for them and they weighed about 120-130 each. This next year we have a few customers lined up for a half a lamb to put in the freezer.

Also for a commercial operation 42,000 chickens is a small farm. It takes a person about 100,000 to 125,000 chickens to make a full time living. Many growers are raising between 150,000 to 300,000 so they can afford to have some hired hands around to do most the daily chores.

Most anyone can raise chickens but it takes a lot of knowledge and expensive equipment to make money doing it. The new standard barn is 66’X600 and cost 400,000 to 450,000 each. That more than I paid for my entire farm.

I've always liked chicken salad, but I'd like to know how to get them to hold still while I put the dressing on 'em....... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I know how to get them to hold still while you put the dressing on them but I don’t think it’s a proper discussion for a public forum. I don’t want anyone upset at me.

Eddie,
I was taught when I was a young man that to get the chickens to grow proper, the males have to be planted head first with just their feet showing. You water the feet at least twice a week and watch them take off. The hens you plant feet first cause it makes them lay eggs better. Don't water the hens too often cause they will get the dry rot and we all know what happens then. You don't have to add anything extra to the soil to make them grow cause them chickens come with their own fertilizer. I know cause I used to use it on my water mellons and man did they take off.

Re: What\'s the most profitable way make cash, farming

We have about 6000 Christmas trees planted on about 6 acres of our 20. When we finally open to the public for "cut-your-own" in another year or two, the potential is there to make about $20k per year. Unfortunately, you have to shell out a lot of money in the first 5-7 years (trees, spray, shearing labor) before you will ever see a dime of profit.

We have one of those cut-your-own tree places here. They do it up right with trailer rides, hot chocolate, and loading it on/in your vehicle........... Employees some help at cutting time and seems to make some $$$$$$$$.

"Around here you can sell top soil for a nice profit. Some people buy a few acres, strip the topsoil and sell the land a in year or so for development. You can also sell rock to landscapers if you have the right type. Rock and top soil business??? Might not
be a good business there, but it seems to be here.
Curt"
Hey Curt, who ever is selling top soils by temporarily buying land and stripping it needs to be jailed. Once in jail, he can take some long distance courses on understanding Biomass and the permanent damage they are causing to the land.
Unfortunately, what they are doing is not illegal, yet, but totally unethical.

Very interesting thread. Some good humor too!

Around here there seem to be a few making some good money on goats and sheep. Other than that it's HUGE operations who have millions and millions invested.

Agritourism also works for a small number of farms, they seem to be making a good go of it.

Except this one fella though, he didn't think it through.
