Yesterday was an interesting day for my kids. School's out and they are old enough to stay at home alone (my daughter is 15 and my son is 12).
About 2:00 yesterday my daughter called their mom and told her that 2 men had pulled up in the driveway, got out of their truck and walked around the back of our house. The kids were both upstairs watching them from the window trying to figure out who they were when one of the men said " All right, they have a John Deere too!" They discussed how they were going to cut the cable that locks up the kids' ATVs, one said "let's do it now" but the other guy wanted to come back later. By now my daughter had called 911.
My wife left work and got there a little bit before the police ( /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif took them 45 minutes to respond). My daughter described one of the men well enough that the officer knew exactly who he was and told them that he had already been stopped for questioning 4 times this week and added, "of course it's only Thursday".
They located them within an hour and asked why they were trespassing on our property. Their answer? The homeowner asked them to come out and give them a bid for some remodelling. Wrong. Second try, They thought the house was vacant and they were interested in buying it. Wrong again. The second moron speaks up and said that the name on the mail box was the same as his and he wanted to stop by to see if maybe we were related. As it turns out, I am distantly related, he is my cousin's boy, of course I haven't seen or spoken to my cousin in 30 years. Strike 3.
The DA has asked us to file criminal trespass charges. I'm only too happy to oblige. It goes without saying, but I'm very proud of my kids for keeping a cool head and knowing what to do in what I'm sure was a freightening situation.
