Yesterday was an interesting day for my kids. School's out and they are old enough to stay at home alone (my daughter is 15 and my son is 12).

About 2:00 yesterday my daughter called their mom and told her that 2 men had pulled up in the driveway, got out of their truck and walked around the back of our house. The kids were both upstairs watching them from the window trying to figure out who they were when one of the men said " All right, they have a John Deere too!" They discussed how they were going to cut the cable that locks up the kids' ATVs, one said "let's do it now" but the other guy wanted to come back later. By now my daughter had called 911.

My wife left work and got there a little bit before the police ( /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif took them 45 minutes to respond). My daughter described one of the men well enough that the officer knew exactly who he was and told them that he had already been stopped for questioning 4 times this week and added, "of course it's only Thursday".

They located them within an hour and asked why they were trespassing on our property. Their answer? The homeowner asked them to come out and give them a bid for some remodelling. Wrong. Second try, They thought the house was vacant and they were interested in buying it. Wrong again. The second moron speaks up and said that the name on the mail box was the same as his and he wanted to stop by to see if maybe we were related. As it turns out, I am distantly related, he is my cousin's boy, of course I haven't seen or spoken to my cousin in 30 years. Strike 3.

The DA has asked us to file criminal trespass charges. I'm only too happy to oblige. It goes without saying, but I'm very proud of my kids for keeping a cool head and knowing what to do in what I'm sure was a freightening situation.

Hi Curt,
Thats a very good ending to a real bad story !!! Yes you should thank your kids for doing a great job! The only other thing I could have thought was if they got the marker number on the vehicle.

I would say you got lucky this time!!!

And the nice thing is that their attempts to alibi themselves only convicts them of the trespass. To bad there will be a problem proving the planned theft.

Lucky is right. Our house is surrounded by crop land and the house is completely obscured from view once the corn is up. Had the kids not been home it would have been easy to take what ever they could load up. We keep the ATVs locked up with an aircraft grade steel cable and harden lock but if you really wanted them bad enough you could get them.

We have a full blood GSD who is kept on a zip line while we're not home (because of UPS deliveries, meter readers, etc) but not anymore. If someone comes on the property now, the kids will have to hook her up first.

Wow, you got lucky. Good thing the kids were home and knew what to do.... and I hope you said something to the police about their response time. What if the clowns had decided to enter your home? 45 minutes.... ridiculous.

I recently asked about locking stuff up, got varying responses and decided to Google it this morning for the heck of it.
Here's one of the sites I came up with: web page
I ordered an alarm for my ATV this morning with the perimiter warning. This way if anyone enters my pole barn for anything (tractors, gas, tools) the ATV's alarm will sound. I'm still trying to locate the special chain and lock locally.

Oh, and small world on the distant relation to one of the guys /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
