Sharp chains are good and all...
.....but don't forget to file down the rakers.

Muffler mod as others have stated, 40:1 Tru-fuel from either Tractor Supply, or Home depot. $20 gallon, 93 octane, pure gasoline. Open up high speed screw.
You can read about mods at arborist.com site. Entire forum on chainsaws. Great info, and helpful people. Many pics of modded mufflers.

Our sawing is different and more in the dirt, than most folks need to do. In the field, we always carry three sharp chains with us and files. So yes, we file the one that's on the saw, but only so much before it gets replaced with a machine sharpened one. Sharp chains are your friend.

We'll not modify any of our saws mufflers. We work on NFS lands and don't need the extra noise or risk of fire. Personally we'd buy a larger saw if we needed more HP.

Before proceeding with any modifications, might be a good idea to do a compression test and pull the muffler so you can have a look at the piston and cylinder. After that maybe go over and visit arboristsite.com or opeforum.com. Got some pretty smart fellas over there. I also believe there might be a big bore kit for that saw.

Re: Whereç—´ the best place or way to increase performance with a chainsaw.

The 372 isn a good lab rat for mods. I might start with my smaller and cheaper saws. I閾エe got a $20 dollar polan that whatever happens to it is fine. I閾エe got a 353 Husqvarna and a 540 Dolmar that don see much use anymore. Getting 5 hp from those saws would be a real game changer.
I have no idea what a mod might do for your saw. But I know I like it on mine.

Back in 2009 I was just starting to transition to retirement and realized I would need more chainsaw than my venerable 021. So I went to Arborist forum and they were raffling off a "snellerized with wood port" 660 and a JD CS62 for an ill member. I won second prize, the JD CS62. Sweet running saw but a little weak for CSM and other things I wanted to do.

Then about a year later I bought an ebay rebuilt 660. Good running saw. But I wanted more so I put a dual port muffler on it. Definitely more power.

About another year went by and the guy that won the 660 put it up for sale. I bought it.

Both the snellerized with woods mod saw and the dual port saw are way more powerful than a standard 660, but seem almost equal to me.

Now if you want your 372 to run like this:

You should bite the bullet and get a pro to mod it. And run the best sharp chains. But at least get the muffler opened up.

$20/gal is not worth it to me. I would buy a bigger saw and extra chains. But then I am only cutting wood for my fireplace and for campfires. Maybe if you make your living cutting wood, cost is justified.

I’m not paying it either. The saw holds nearly a quart of fuel and probably runs 20 minuets on it.

Re: Where痴 the best place or way to increase performance with a chainsaw.

As others stated, cutting restriction in exhaust will help. pull muffler make sure ex port and muffler not obstructed with carbon on any 2 stroke losing power. Raising compression helps alot. somone suggested removing the base gasket between crankcase cylinder jug if equipomed. Need a good sealant like yamabond in its place. Compressing relatively same volume into smaller space same thing if you can find a longer spark that piston wont hit, that ups your compression too by decreasing the area you are squeezing. A tachometer and a infared heat gun thermometer for head temps eliminates alot of guesswork on tuning . leaner runs faster on top end but fine line and too lean seizing scoring piston too lean this also slows throttle response too, you can compensate some on the low speed but at full throttle and rpms drop, too lean of mixture causes detonation, burn a hole in piston or sieze up. Friend and I worked on jetskis and raced them and gopeds as a hobby for 15 or more years. I modded my goped, soldered and redrilled jets, ported, made a spacer for the muffler to change the tuning (sound wave changes exhaust port timing and can bounce the fuel air back in the cylinder before piston closes port) longer spark plug and a bigger drive roller and someone clocked me at 27mphwith their radar on pump gas. Stock ones running 17mph Friends were going alcohol and getting a little more. Once you start filing ports you really cant go back and can end up with way less power that you had to start.

Guys on AS often go for very high compression ratios. That can be counter productive in that it adds a lot of heat to the engine. If you look at two stroke racing motorcycles they run lower compression ratios than many saws but make 4x the power per cc. They do that with better port design.

What will improve power will be closing down the squish clearance. Stock engines often have more squish clearance than needed because of the production tolerances of cylinders, pistons and rods. Any clearance beyond what's needed to keep the piston from hitting the cylinder is wasted volume- the mixture in there does not burn with the rest of the mixture in the combustion chamber. It burns later and less efficiently. Redcing that makes more power.

Most saws have the head and cylinder as one piece which makes it harder to set the squish clearance without raising the compression ratio (by maching the combustion chamber). On motorcycles, jet skis etc it's commonly done.

Be a man! Put an expansion chamber on it!
