Where are all the CUMMINS fans?!

Several 07-08 Cummins owners over on the dieselgarage.com have deleted the dpf crap and they are reporting that the 6.7 is the best engine yet. I have read almost all of the threads concerning the problems with the 6.7 and after the delete none of the owners have reported further problems. All that I have read have reported more MPG and power.

I'm not picking on you, Todd_C, and I'm sure that resolves the reliability issues, but doesn't that leave the owner stuck with a truck that won't pass an emissions test? From what i hear, tampering with a federal emissions device on an automobile or truck is a huge fine.

And why should anyone have to remove a pollution device to make a $50,000 truck run reliably?

I do not know about a fine, but I would bet a dollar and a doughnut that it would void the factory warranty, regardless of what make the truck is. It really is unfortunate, because I beleive that Cummins makes a quality engine, as do Navistar and Isuzu [Duramax]. It is all the federaly mandated emissions crap that gives these great engines bad reps. I bet any of these engines would realy wake up if you blocked off the EGR, and chucked the restrivtive DPF exhaust system for a good free flowing exhaust. It is just to bad that you have to sacrifice your factory warranty on a very expensive truck {regardless of make} to realize your engines true reliability and economy potential.

Here is a pic of my Cummins ride. 45,000 trouble free miles. 5.9 ISB 24 Valve Turbo and with the trans Dodge boys would love to have - Allison 6 speed.

Great post. Just a small correction:

Duramax is no longer affiliated with Isuzu. GM bought all remaining stock that Isuzu owned in "Duramax Ltd." about 4 years ago.

Duaramax Ltd is now a diesel truck engine plant located in Moraine, OH that is completely owned by GM. Isuzu no longer has any ownership or participation in Duramax engines other than that Isuzu might still be supplying some parts for it.

And yes, there is a substantial fine for tampering with a pollution system on a vehicle. It is not frequently enforced, but removing it is a "federal offense".

I'm not advocating that an owner of a new 6.7 do this, but at this time there just doesn't seem to be a repair for the problem. I probably would consider the delete if I had a 40k-50k setting in the garage with a mechanic who can't fix the problem. Dodge doesn't seem to be helping matters, so the owner is left with no other alternative. Most truck buyers don't have the cash to eat this kind of investment and they need the truck to perform. What good is a warranty when the problem can't be corrected?

I'm not knocking GM and if I had to buy a new truck it would be one with a Duramax just because this engine seems to be the only one without problems right now.

Yeah, it is good to know that once these trucks get older and the warranties expire, There are kits available to rid them of the pollution crap. In my County, we are forced to take a tailpipe emissions test every 2 years in order to renew our licence plates. I don't hold much faith in these, as all they test a diesel for is opacity, which both times has been 0.0 with the chip set on 75 hp and the truck puffing every time the trans shifts. All of our work trucks register the same, in a stock tune of course. In a less populated county, with no test, I doubt you would ever get caught for removing it. If I lived in say California, where they are very pollution strict, I would not even try it.

Or the Northeast. Regular truck stops for minor violations will also include an inspection of the emissions system. I would think that a normal state emissions inspection would include a visual inspection to make sure the DPF is there.
