Where do you buy your metal stock?

Cool! Did you get out into the main yard? If you think the inside shop is well stocked, you should see the yard... Those guys do have everything, and I'm glad it was what you were looking for. I just wish they hadn't boosted their prices so much the past few years. I guess I was spoiled...

Yeah, same out here; 5-6 years ago from the same company I was paying .33-.36 a pound, and a $50 order got you free delivery. Been ove .90 a pound the last 3 years or so. I guess technically the free delivery is the same - you just get half as much steel for the money  ... Steve

I loved finding the rolled pipe that was waste from "dialing in" their rolling machine for the right radius. They intrigued me but I never really found a use for these rings, so other than a few projects like a wood fire grill, they turned into this.

Be cool to have something like that out front beside my mailbox, but on this all but blind hill, I just can't have anything that might distract drivers.

No, they had everything I needed inside the showroom. I guess I'll have to make a point to do that next time I need to stock up. It would certainly be nice if it was less expensive.

I'd guess you purchased rail, not track... Did you catch the weight of that rail? Should say 60 to 140 on its side.
Not enough track to see any markings. Actually have two pieces now... different sizes (gauges?) each cut to 12 1/4in. That is all the length that was usable (straight).

I don't understand that. Seems like it would be a gold mine for them to serve the hobby/home use market.
I was frustrated to learn that my LWS sells the drops for the same price as they do for cut material! There was a bunch of oddball pieces of heavy plate and short bar stock that I would have been happy to take without having them cut them. But since there was no discount, I had them cut pieces from long stock to the length I needed instead.

Rail - weigh your 1 foot pieces, multiply by 3, that should be the number (that isn't :=) on your pieces. Rail on this continent is rated by weight per yard.
(if your piece weighs just over 20 pounds (slightly longer than a foot) it'd be 60 pound rail, etc... Steve

The gauge is the width between the rails and the weight is by 3ft sections. Most dated weights were in the 60 to 100lb area and modern main-line ones at least in NA, tend to be 140 or more.

Dumb question, Why do they have 2 different styles of rail?
