Where do you guys buy your oil and filters?

I totally agree and was about to make the same comment until I read yours first. Why give them a "second" chance. They already had their opportunity to make a sale. The same goes for all merchants and any major purchase I make. ;)

Be careful for what you wish for.Cheaper does NOT always mean better products. If it"s apples to apples same product I agree..
It is apples to apples that I was referring to.

However, now that you brought it up, the reverse is also true in some cases. A more expensive product doesn't necessarily equate to a better product. That's where common sense, a little research, and logic comes into play. Plus taking everything we read on internet forums with a grain of salt. ;)

Not all dealers have the ability to decide what to charge or mark up parts. The list price is generally set by the tractor OEM. And to me it is a tough thing. I want the dealer to be successful so I have a place to go and get my questions answered and my equipment fixed when it痴 beyond my capabilities or I need that special o ring now not 2 days from now. But I hate the feeling of getting hosed.

We have JD stuff and Kubota stuff, I am not 100% certain that is true. I would imagine it's like everything else, they buy it from the manuf. at x then add x percent for selling. As long as that is close to or under the manuf. MSRP, should it matter?

I have shopped different dealers and gotten different prices, the local JD guy sells for x, but the guy 1 hour away will sell it a little cheaper and ship it to my door, the guy 2 hours away sells stuff a little cheaper yet, if I drive down to get them. :confused2: All depends on what is going on, where we get parts from. When things are really bad, it's road service. Our profit margins are slim, we have to do what we can to get equipment running with as little expense as possible.

I like my local Kubota, JD place and rental yard + the people who work there. I do want them to be there 50 years from now. The owners and I have had the same conversation about why can I get it from them and not you for this price. We're still working on our difference of opinion

Seems to me that the box store parts stores have gone way up in prices in the last few years. $7 a quart for house brand cheapO oil? $12 for a mid grade oil filter? Don't have exactly what I want or need? No thanks. I'm sick of going there and having to compromise and pay much more that I thought. Or walk out and waste my time entirely.

Funny as it sounds, Kubota, John Deere, Ford, GM and Honda have all surprised me with reasonable $$$ OEM maintenance parts. Also finding in stock, EXACT fit, and high quality parts make the trip to the dealers worth it. Honda and Kubota also seal their oil filters. I like that, especially when I stock a few. Based on these things, I've gone to buying OEM filters and stocking up on my choices of oil.

I guess if it is a core critical part I will stay with the manuafacture OEM. Less critical parts might be a spot for aftermarket. Having just typed that, I bought an aftermarket 3 point hitch for one of my tractors that did not have it when I bought it used and regretted it. Did not fit, broke, needed welding to repair....

I buy oil from oil companies like Shell or Mobil and filters from companies that manufacture filters like Wix or Baldwin. I don't buy from companies that just put their name on these products like John Deere or Agco does bucause I have no idea what the quality is or where they came from. Besides that theres not a tractor dealer in my area that I would do business with anyway, their all pretty lame.

Last time I took my LS 6168CPS to a dealer for just an oil change and lube job they charged my $430!! so I have decided to do it my self from now on. The LS brand of oil filters are expensive so I took one to a car parts store and they matched me up with a readily available commercial filter that was a fraction of the cost of the LS brand. A guy needs to be frugal where he can!

Nothing wrong with saving where you can, particularly on labor.

Ive got a Deere but I buy as little as possible at their store since everythings twice the price or more. I can get it at autovalue and they do hydraulic hoses there too. Worthington is a good source for parts too.

The last 2 local dealers that I bought parts from are both out of business now. The Deere dealer just couldn't do anything right and they finally went under, and the Massey dealer was very good but they couldnt compete with all the Asian tractor shops that popped up everywhere so they closed down as well.

I buy WIX/NAPA oil filters for my tractor either online or NAPA, Motorcraft oil filters for my 7.3 and wife's Ford Edge at Walmart, and Valvoline conventional for the car and Rotella conventional for the truck and tractor either at Walmart or Rural King. Rural King has been having better prices on their oil plus a $10 rebate on Rotella the last 2 times I bought. I also buy my CRC Brakleen at Rural King for $3.99 - I use a lot of it for a lot of different things and this is the best price I've seen in years on it. It's great for cleaning-up after an oil change, evaporates quickly and is non-flammable. Of course it's great for doing brake work too .... cleaning oil/grease spots out of clothing, seats or carpet, pre cleaner on metal before painting etc.
