Where do you guys buy your oil and filters?

Deere dealership wanted $2300 to split my machine and replace just the pto clutch. I paid a man that works out of his shed $1300 to do both the PTO and Drive clutch and he had it done in 2 days. He makes his living working on tractors and has a good reputation. I dont feel a loyalty to any business that charges so much more. I might buy a tractor there since I like John Deere but maintenance and such - I shop around.

In general, I tend to agree with you. And would do the same if such a reliable tractor mechanic was located in my area.

And to think you had both, the PTO and drive clutch replaced for $1300. :thumbsup:

However, when comparing costs, any dealership has a great deal more overhead expense to cover than someone working alone out of his shed.

When you guys mention $400-$500 for an oil change, do you mean just the engine oil and filter or a full change out of the hydraulic system or both?

Oil and filter for just the engine should only be $60-$80 depending on how much oil your tractor takes. (CUT and SCUT)

Also, if your dealer is doing the oil change, most likely you are paying for a specific service that includes the oil change and many other lubes , checks and adjustments.
I could see that being $4-500.

Okay, that clears it up then. To me when someone says oil change that is just the engine oil and filter.

You were including your hydraulic system as well. Which does not need changing as often as the engine oil.
The hydraulic system uses a lot of synthetic fluid which would be the majority of the cost.

I just called JD about an oil filter: just less than $10. Think 2 quarts of Castrol 5w30 TDI rated (ESP oil) will be about $14, maybe $16 now, at the local VW dealership. Seems the only place I can get xw30 oil. Use it in both the JD tractor and Isuzu diesel generator. Ran our VW TDI for nearly 70k miles before VW bought it back. VW claim no engine issues due to lube oil. Gotta be saving me fuel. Haven't put enough hours on the 2025R to know yet. Isuzu is already super low at 0.2 gph. Runs the whole all electric house.

Any local oil company can usually supply lubricants for less than dealer oil prices, or just ask any truck driver where they shop because they go through a lot of fluids and know how to keep the cost down.

The Kubota super UDT2 is 25 bucks and change per gallon; my 3301 holds over 6 gallons. There is nothing I have seen which is comparable; and if it quiets down that "whine" I can't help wondering if it's also better for the hydraulic system.

I sometimes buy OEM filters, and sometimes buy them from NAPA...

My NAPA dealer is closer than my tractor dealer, so I guess I AM supporting my local store...

On fluids, for sure.

I like wix/Napa "gold" filters and find them better than most automotive brands. If Kubota makes better, I'll use them.

Kubota better be better as they are 3x the cost even onlime!

Same for udt2, not worth scrimpingq

Actually, with my NX it was the filters that cost substantially more than the fluid. Fortunately my dealer's prices have dropped (someone figured out that folks couldn't stomach the high prices and got from elsewhere- one hydraulic filter ran something like $100).

Regarding aftermarket products, there is more than casual evidence that there are plenty of parts out there that FAR exceed OEM stuff. And, of course, there's plenty of evidence out there showing that there are aftermarket products that are absolutely horrible. Research, and knowing how to do it properly, is your friend.

While under warranty I buy fluids (except engine oil) and filters from the dealer so that I have a trail. Receipts on oil purchase show type of oil (which will demonstrate compliance with manufacturer's specs/recommendations).
