My idea of the dream is in line with what Eddie said. I've been out of the house since 17 also and have a trade. I'm in Power Generation and have worked all over the North East including Boston. I've seen the companies I work for see soaring profits meanwhile the rank and file keep loosing thier piece of the pie. Land prices can be as high as 100k per acre. There's not alot of it availble either. I have three kids and work over 800hrs of OT per year. I'd sure like a more time to enjoy life and less time making money for some else.

I know it's not a simple thing or decision but, do what Eddie has done. Research it, plan it out and then (hardest part) do it.

I consider myself very fortunate...
Gainfully employed since 1982 and only unemployed 1 time in that 33 year period and that was for only 6 weeks...
I had to update my educational skill levels to stay employed in the community college system...
I am looking at retirement in 7 to 10 years and fully vested in the state retirement system...
My son and daughter-in-law both have great jobs and are doing well...
I know one thing for certain...
In this day and age nothing is certain anymore...
Just do the best you can and keep striving...

You may want to check the percentage of pension short fall contributions most states are running, now. Many states are looking for a way out to pay pensioners due to never actually having put the money aside.

That's sort of what I have in mind, someplace where the middle class is still thriving with a reasonable cost of living.

Methinks in the next 10-20 years (actually already started)...there will be a major shift in what has typically been realized in the labor force...skilled labor will outpace college graduates when it comes to earning potentials...
...These days...the chain comes off a kids bicycle and they use their cell phone to find someone that can put it back on...
...before long it is going to take both a mechanic and a programming tech just to fix a washing machine etc...

Joke:
There was a story of a plumber being called to a doctor's home to do some work. After working for about an hour, the plumber gave the M.D. a bill for $200. The doctor said, "Good Gracious Man! I have been to medical school and residency and have been practicing medicine for over 20 years and I can't charge that kind of money!" The plumber smiled and said, "Yeah, I couldn't either when I was in practice."

Move to Wisconsin from up State New York in the early 90s, parents and sister are still there, for a job here, turned down offers in larger cities, best move ever made. Taxes could be lower, regulations could be less but it is not bad, we have no building inspector in the town i live in. I know where you are coming from, i have friends in Connecticut and spent a bunch of time there for work. We have looked at other states but we have a good school system and excellent heath care. My mom and i have the same condition and i can get the same thing in days and she waits weeks. I have doctor friends that have moved here for the health care and standard of living.
Taught my boys that nothing worth while comes easy and refused to pay for there college education, even though we could afford too. They are both hard working and mechanically inclined, there high school had an excellent tech ed program, both are in technical college, each one has a GOOD part time job in there field making a good hourly wage. They have a year of college to go and both there employers are giving them benefits I had to work twenty years for. Both have students in the class that have 4 year business degrees that took them no where, so i think times are a changing. My point jobs are here as long as you are skilled and willing to work. And when it is all said and done my kids will be able to afford to live here! That is the American Dream.

My part of California seems to boom or bust... right now it is boom.

Can't go anywhere without seeing help wanted signs and hiring job fairs...

Several of my coworkers have 20 something kids with STEM degrees and were all actively recruited to places like Google, Genentech, Facebook, Apple, etc... kind of crazy to have a 27 year old son that makes more than his old man who is a MD in private practice for 30 years... but this is what I am seeing.

The downside is housing prices close in have as much as doubled in the last three years and in better areas a typical suburban home on a city lot can be a million dollars which staggers the mind.

Taxes are also high here in that California has jsut about every tax known to man... and even then, I met a guy from New Jersey and says California Property Tax is a bargain... guess it is all relative.

New hire Registered Nurses and New Hire Police officers in the SF Bay area easily make over 100k in wages and benefits and both professions are hiring...

Seeing lots of newcomers following their American Dream and making it work here...

Well it wouldn't be any different than what private industry did. Executives kick you to the curb on the way to the chow line. I managed very well around it, but some have not.
