WHERE TO MOUNT PLATE ?

   / WHERE TO MOUNT PLATE ? #11
Ohio does not require a license plate on tractors; a slow moving vehicle sign is required. I wonder how many states require license plates? Thanks for the information. Good luck finding a spot. Does it have to face toward the rear?

Stick it to the window glass or rear surface of the cab roof with a generous application of RTV type silicone. Clear works well for this type of job. The plate and silicone can be removed when the time comes; no drilling.

Thanks for all the suggestions gang !
I just finished a quick mount .... I took the center bolt out of the ac pannel and drilled a hole through it and attached the top of a piece of sheet metal , the other end to an old plastic trailer plate bracket .
It sits right behind the top of the cab and is level with the cab roof and only hangs down about an inch below it, no visibilty loss out the rear glass, I think it looks ok there ,I will get a few pictures up soon.
dqdave1, As far as I was told every state requires a plate and a regestration + insurance .Farmers have policys that cover them and they get ag plates.
Technically speaking if you are not regestered and an accident occours your fault or not. its your fault .
Thats how my lawyer explained it to me. If I am not insured and regerstered on the tractor it's the same as driving a car or any other vehicle without ins. and reg. in New York thats a mandatory loose your liscense for a year.
I know it's a bunch of bull $*#t but , thats the way it is theese days and the ins. around here is a real rip off .
I have been going over the road for years SMV sign, flashers and carefully with no problems , but I don't want to take the chance anymore after a few close calls with bad drivers and talking to my lawyer.
Sorry to say it folks but you need insurance and regesteration of some kind in any state in the U. S. the theese days to be legal .If some one gets hurt in an accident you ars screwed if you don't have it.
I don't like it anymore than you guys probably do but... that is the way it is unfortunately.
BE SAFE and get legal , less to worry about on the road .
Thanks again for the help gang ,the feed back is always great, Lone Oak

I know for a fact that in Connecticut construction vehicles need to be registered and insured. Ag tractors (being used between fields, bases of operation and maintenance areas) require no insurance or registration. There is also no licensing or ag restrictions on Ag equipment operators. In Massachusetts you need plates and insurance to even cross the road.

I was told that you still need insurance even in conn. Farmers are covered under thier farms blanket poloicy.
Again just going by what my lawyer told me . If that were the case than are you saying a farmer can also buzz down the road in a truck or a 4- wheeler and say it's legal ?
Like I said no is 100% legal without some kind of ins. and reg. thats why they issue ag. plates in all states I'm pretty sure.
Now take for instance what I use mine for ... mostly plowing snow commercially YOU HAVE TO BE INS. and REG or your not legal period, I did't make it up to star an arguement , it's the law end of story.
If you cause an accident lets say someone passing you has a head on .its your fault you caused it becaue your not supposed to be on the road if your not legal to do so.
It doesn't matter how many blinking lights you have or SMV signs , thoes are just violations if you do not have them , they DO NOTmake you legal .
Turn siginals and brake lights don't make your car or truck legal ..... Insurance , reg, and inspection DOES .

if it is a farm tractor or a piece of self-propelled agricultural equipment you DO NOT have to register it, most trucks (other than possibly spreader trucks) would not fall under those classifications, and a 4wheeler would fall under the general 4wheeler rules, not AG rules.
this is according to the CT DOT site, see the quote below:
Registration of farm (agricultural) tractors and self-propelled agricultural equipment is not required. Farm tractors and self-propelled agricultural equipment may not be used on public roads for transporting good for hire (transporting products of others for pay or for other commercial purposes. When operating on a public road at speeds less than the posted speed limit, the driver of a farm tractor or self-propelled agricultural equipment must yield to vehicles approaching from behind. Farm tractors and self-propelled agricultural equipment not designed or employed in general highway transportation are not permitted on limited access highways.

Now take for instance what I use mine for ... mostly plowing snow commercially YOU HAVE TO BE INS. and REG or your not legal period, I did't make it up to star an arguement , it's the law end of story.
if you are snowplowing for hire (by the definition above) you are transporting for hire and thus do not fall under the exemption above.
If you cause an accident lets say someone passing you has a head on .its your fault you caused it becaue your not supposed to be on the road if your not legal to do so.
according to the CT DOT website you are supposed to yield to vehicles overtaking from behind if you are going less than the speed limit if you do that you are good, AFAIK it is the responsibility of the person overtaking you to do it safely if they are in the other lane and get hit THEY are at fault for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

It doesn't matter how many blinking lights you have or SMV signs , thoes are just violations if you do not have them , they DO NOTmake you legal.
what makes you legal (without a plate, just a SMV sign and lights) is being classified as a farm tractor or a piece of self-propelled agricultural equipment, otherwise you are 100% correct
Turn siginals and brake lights don't make your car or truck legal ..... Insurance , reg, and inspection DOES .
your car is not classified as a farm tractor or a piece of self-propelled agricultural equipment, therefore it falls under the rules for cars and is not exempted under the AG rules

in short if you are driving a farm tractor or a piece of self-propelled agricultural equipment on the road to get from one field to another, or to be repaired, etc but are NOT transporting goods for hire. you DO NOT have to have a plate on your tractor, otherwise you have to be registered and inspected.

aczlan , good job ! Thanks you helped clear that up .
I don't know how to put up stuff the way you did from DOT. The NY DOT has similar rules ,what we were looking up was mostly commercial ,I do remember reading about yielding to traffic but in NY it says you do not have to yield untill 3 or more cars are behind you for 2 miles :) . Not like I would ever do that , we always move over if it is safe to do so,and most people are cool and usually wave. It's the impatient ones that can't wait 10 od 30 seconds for a safe pull off like a shoulder or driveway that scare me .
Pearsonaly I think the farmers should be able to what they want it seems to be getting tougher on them all the time.
Aw well I as legal as I can be for around here I guess and with what they charge for insurance around here I run to the pump in town to get fuel when I need it sometimes , beats lugging cans around.

Anyone know the rule for county routes , not interstates , can I drive on one ? A half mile run on route 9w .... saves me three miles on back roads .

I looked at this a while ago. in NY you ALWAYS need insurance . If you have farm property separated by a creek and you need to go out on a public road to get from one to the other you do not need plates. Not sure about actually crossing the road . For everything else you do. Farm plates are not expensive but you do need insurance. Commercial operation I would think expensive insurance and more expensive plates.

6sunset6, Yea the insurance is a rip off, the reason I am asking about route 9w which is a 45mph highway is exactly what you said .... I need to cross the river , if I go around on backroads it is a heck of alot further.
Guess my next question is since I have plates and insurance I should be legal anywhere right ? ? Except major interstates I figure.
I don't want to go on buisy roads anyway but just want to make sure I am legal on the road .
The DMV really wasn't much help , And the NYS - DOT and DMV websites are kinda vauge to my understanding. I could use some help to figure it out.
Mabey we should start this thread somewhere elese on the site to get more feedback . thanks , Lone Oak.
