where to put fence post-Right on Property line

Built my fence line about 1' inside the property line, which I had surveyed prior to putting in the fence. I have NO desire to again spend days with a post hole digger, cement and such that it took to put in that 200' of solid fence. When I got past the fence line (for appearance along the county road and the junction of my property with my neighbor) there was still 1000' of property line, so I planted wax myrtles interspersed with oaks, and such are 5 feet inside the property line so I have ample room for trimming.
No problems with my neighbors, but conservative fence lines and good landscaping do tend to make them happy.

In Illinois you put the fence right on the line. As you stand on your property, you are resposible for the fence on the right and your neighbor has to put in a fence to match what you do.(with in reason) We have a local fence arbitration board which settles all fence disputes.

I'm not a fence person but I am curious.

Does this mean if one property owner does not want a fence that only half a fence gets put up? Does a desire for a fence in your state demand that your neighbor put up his half regardless if he wants to spend the money or not?

What if surveyors disagree by inches on the property line? Does the first to put up a fence have to take it back down and move it a bit?

Curious here, nothing more...

Ditto what Henro asked? I don't understand the concept. If I am facing north as I stand on my property, I have a different neighbor to my left than if I were facing south. I would really like to understand this, but it makes absolutely no sense to me.

Are you and your neighbor facing each other at the very center point of the property line? You take right and he takes to your left? That makes a sense. Is that what you mean?

funny you should state it the way you did. It means if my neighbor puts in 39 inch woven wire, I match it. That case came up on my west border. The neighbor to the west has sheep, I wanted to just put in a two strand smooth wire fence and since he was putting in woven wire I had to match his or put in fence which would control his animals. If I do not put the fence in, he can put it in and charge me a fair price after following proper procedure. Survey results do cause contreversy. Yes if you put your fence up and a new survey shows a problem with the measures it goes to the Township controlled fence revue comittee. Usually it finishes with a compromise and yes you take the fence down and put it where you are told. With less and less livestock in the area these disputes are not frequent, but they still do happen. The best thing I can say is good fences make good neighbors and fence problems are a pain.

Ken , that is exactly what i mean. I have 6 different property lines to deal with. All six have different owners. Each of them have to fence half of that line. I have a lawyer on one side, a recluse with no money on one side, a truck diver, a chemical engineer, a retired 79 year old widow and a retired fireman who raises day lillies. It can be a pain trying to keep them all happy

I just found my photo from the terra server and will try to resize it to post and show what I mean.

To make it a bit clearer: You have the half to your right - 'looking at the fence from your property'- Was common in many ag states, may still be for all I know.

Although line fence law is similar in many states, it is important that you know the law for your particular state before erecting a fence. I assume you are in a rural area where there is no zoning or other local ordinances that would apply. If that is the case, then you must look to Oklahoma state law. Start with this site and go to Section 5:

www.cattleinformation.com/Oklahoma_laws.htm

There are some technical exceptions so it would be good advice to talk your plans over with an attorney familiar with ag law before you start building your fence. You may save yourself a costly lawsuit later.
