Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

Chris, The electric clutch is an add on, not sure if it's still available as a kit, may have to get all parts seperately. It mounts to the front of the engine off the crankshaft. As for the belly mount woods, all of the belly mount woods I've seen, run off of the rear pto (that does'nt mean front clutch mount does'nt exist) and to be honest with you (my opinion only) the woods belly mounts seem to be more trouble than they're worth, and provide just about the same quality of cut, if not more inferior than a 3ph mounted grooming mower. The rear mount mower has got to be less $$$$$, especially if you have to add a front clutch set up. The other things to consider would be ease of removal, the rear grooming mower is a snap to remove, the belly mount is more time and energy consuming, with the belly mount, alot have a very low hanging bracket in the rear that causes some major ground clearance issues. If you have a loader or want to install a front blade the presence of that woods belly mount makes it a real pain in the *** to switch implements.

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

i have a 85 model B6100, 2500 hours, belly mower, pto tiller, and pto flail mower; the belly mower is a real pain, i've added wheels on the back of the deck, but it still digs in if the ground isn't level, i am looking for a rear pto 4ft finish mower, they seem to mow a lot better than this belly mower, plus as mentioned before, a lot easier to remove. as for price, i've been trying to sell mine for $2900, no takers, so i guess i'll keep looking for the pto mower. good luck

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

hehaw:

I've got a '78 B6100DT with a FEL. I'be been thinking about getting a 3ph mower for it to use on my 3.5 acre "lawn" (more like a mowed pasture than a golf course) to cut down the time it takes. I use a 46" Lawn Tractor now and figure that I would need to go up to something at least 60" to get any time savings. Do you think that a B6100 would handle a 60" rotary mower? How 'bout a 60" finish mower?

Thanks

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

Bill, I had a 4' rotary cutter when I had the B7100 and figure it was just about the right size. I'd have some doubts about a 5' one on a B6100. I also considered buying a 3-point finish mower and my dealer recommended staying with a 4' one instead of going to the 5'. However, he did say that he had some customers using 5' finish mowers on the B7100 who were happy with them. He said it mowed OK; just that it was so heavy that when the 3-point picked it up, the front end was too light.

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

i don't think i'd go any bigger than a 4ft. it would be nice if someone had a 5ft you could try out to see how it handles, but i really think 4 ft is about max. you might make up some time by being able to get just as good a cut, at a higher speed??

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

I had a 1981 B5100E with the electric front PTO clutch and 42" MMM. I "inherited" mine and the splines on the front shaft were worn down to nothing. Someone had drilled and tapped a hole in the receiver and added a bolt to lock the shaft in place. I later learned that this is an inherent problem with this unit. I priced a replacement and was around $500.00 Canadian. Also, the capabilities of this set-up don't even come close to a typical lawn tractor. With sharp blades and new belt, 1st gear high was maximum, and shifting to 3rd low was common. My neighbor would finish his lawn in half the time with his Craftsman 16HP. IMHO, if the tractor you purchase doesn't have a mid PTO, I suggest you go with a 3ph mower and steer clear of the front PTO clutch unit.

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

HeeHaw,

Just looked at a B6200 HST, 4x4, 1300 hours at the local Deere lot. Wondered why the poor little thing had been sitting so long. Checked the price-- $6,500.00. With no attachments.

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

we have a couple places in the area that sell gray market compact tractors; for a 15-18hp 4wd they want @ $4500-$5000, with no impliments, if you want turf tires they add another $500. i have to admit they look a lot better than my B6100 does, faded paint and oil spills on the motor compared to steam cleaned, detailed and spotless.
i use the tractor mainly to ride my GRANDson around, and then to till the garden before planting and after the last harvest. i'm going to take the front electric clutch and all the mounting stuff for the belly mower off, that will make it look a little better and give it a little more ground clearance.

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

I've been offline for a few days and haven't had a chance to respond.

To my knowledge, Woods does (or at least did) make a mid-mower for the B6100/B7100 series tractors utilizing the front electically-actuated PTO clutch. I was even told that the Kubota brand mid-mower for these tractors was actually built by Woods.

The "D" suffix indicates 4wd / Gear Drive. With this "gear drive" model you won't have a live PTO, which means that if you get rear-mounted PTO equipment you'll have to stop and start the PTO equipment every time you depress the clutch to change gears. This may or may not be a serious problem depending upon what work you are doing.

Experience: I have a B7100D (16hp) 4wd gear drive with 48" mid-mower (front PTO). I have found that I like mid-mowers in general, but this particular design is a real pain. Unless you found one real cheap, I wouldn't bother with one. I also have a B2150 HSD (4wd/24hp 4-cylinder/FEL) that I use an Air-Tunnel 60" Landpride 3-point hitch mower with. To my surprise, my B7100 handled this mower just fine. The only problem is that the lack of Live PTO is also a pain to deal with with these older gear-drive compact Kubotas (unless you mow in relatively open areas). I use a 42" rotary mower on the B7100 just fine (in open areas). I once tried a heavy duty 60" model and my B7100 couldn't even pick it up.

Price: The price varies in different parts of the country. Your profile doesn't indicate which part of the country you live in (your user name implies NJ). If I were in the market to sell my B7100D (which is in excellent shape) my bottom line would be around $4500. It has the mid-mower, a complete set of Turf and Ag tires and a factory ROPS added about 3 years ago.

Hope this helps in your quest to find a good value tractor...

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

Kelvin/Bird/hehaw:

Thanks for your real-world experiences. I think I won't bother pursuing turning my little 'ole B6100DT into a mowing machine. It works great for me now as a "landscaping machine" (FEL, tiller, box blade, rake).

I can't use the front PTO for a MMM anyway because the FEL hydraulic pump uses the front PTO.

That leaves me with a 3pt mower as the only option.
Although I don't have to do very much stopping and starting with the 46" garden tractor mower, I suspect I'd need to do more with a 60" rear-mount on the Kubota so the lack of a live PTO would be a big drawback. Also, I haven't done any side-by-side "races", but I don't think I can drive the Kubota over the rough areas of my land as fast as I drive the GT so mowing speed would be decreased.

Instead of trying to make my Kubota 'stretch', I'll just live with the 46" GT - or maybe see if I can upgrade to the 50" deck for it.

Thanks again.

Re: where\'s mower drive on B6100D

Hi ChrisNJ. I have a B6100D with Belly mower, belt driven off the rear PTO. The blades turn only when I engage the clutch. I don't like it because it raises and lowers with the 3pth and ties up the PTO. So you end up taking the mower off to till your garden, putting it back on to mow your lawn. The belly mower is also in the way of a subframe that is necessary for an fel or other heavy implement.
I removed mine and it took nearly an hour, of course I'm a novice Kubota owner and was checking things out while doing the removal. That aside, it seems like removing that thing should be done once a year, not each time you want to plow or till.
I intend to rebuild my belly mower to make it into a 3pth mounted PTO driven rear mower. Cheaper than buying one, since I have most of the parts.
Good luck finding an electric clutch to be driven from the front PTO. To my knowledge they are out of production and anyone who has one is probably going to leave it on the tractor until it breaks.
If I were you I'd go with a rear mount mower. Have fun with your choices, seems like that's what owning an old Kubota is all about.
