Which Chainsaw ?

/ Which Chainsaw ? #81
How much work do you do with a saw, and what are you accustomed to running? What do you consider to be a small to medium size tree? In the world of chainsaws, light weight, and home owner are NOT used in the same sentence.

In my world, a 12" hickory is a small tree, and I would want a relatively strong 50cc saw to drop anything bigger than 12". For me, something like an MS261 is on the small side for taking down trees. Going with a homeowner grade 50cc just adds weight while reducing power.

I agree with the battery powered saw recommendations, especially if your saw tends to sit for a year or more. With that said, I'd say the 18-20v stuff is marginal for taking down trees. They are fine for cleaning up minor storm damage, but IMHO, many of them are questionable if you're trying to do more than that. My recommendation here is to pick a name brand battery powered lawn tool, and buy their best saw with the plan of also buying their string trimmer and leaf blower and maybe a pole saw so you can justify 2 or 3 batteries and actually get some use out of them.

I also really like the idea of the 2511p. I want one for limbing work, and disaster relief work, but I can't justify the cost for a 30cc saw. I'm waiting for the clones to hit the US market, and will get one of those. I do most of my work with a 60cc saw, and go up to a 90cc saw when needed. I have some older 45 and 50cc saws that I currently use for light work. A 2511p clone would easily replace them for my needs and cut the weight by roughly 25%. To me, there's no need to buy anything that's between a 2511P and an MS261. Everything in between weighs almost as much as the 261 (or husky equivalent), but has noticeably less power.
