Which computer code scanner for F150 & Honda?

Having trouble with my truck. Thought I might get on of the code scanners/readers. Did a google search - wow! Can spend anywhere from $50 to $2,000. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Seems that the basic ones will read OBD II codes. Will a more advanced one give more data? I'd rather spend $300 once than $100 4X. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Is there one that will also read other vehicles (Wife's Honda for example)

Please school me.

I have seen these in a lot of Auto Parts stores.If they don't have them ,They can get them quickly.

I think AutoZone advertises that they will scan the codes for you for free?

I mix up AutoZone and Advance Auto, so check (call) both in your area.

Advance still checks alternators and batteries for free, so maybe it was them?

Anyone know for sure?

Your Ford may have a procedure for getting it to show you the codes on the digital odometer display. Seems I read something about this, could be completely off here.

The other thing is, in my experience, at least half the time the codes, if any are indicated, don’t lead to a diagnosis of the problem. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

hazmat, if both are newer than 1996 they are OBDII,the same
Having said that,reading the codes and replacing the indicated
part without checking is like shooting craps. It's very expensive and it may not fix the problem. Best to find a good mechanic and have him test parts before replacement. For example, if the gas cap is left loose a code will set for an emmision valve. This ain't rocket science but it's close /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you have a laptop computer check for Auto Tap on the internet. The package consists of software and an interface cable. Much more versatile than the fixed code scanners. You really need the service manuals and to follow the trouble shooting procedures to find the actual trouble spot.
