Which oil is king?

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

( my wife's new Ford Ranger... a prototype SVO 4.0 OHC V-6...use 5-30 Ford synthetic oil in the engine )

Why?

The last couple years, all Ford's had switched over to 5w-20... how come 5w-30? (with very few exceptions)

I was thinking the same thing, John. Both my Fords are running 5W-20, as recommended, but I'm surprised that they recommend that even in the Texas heat.

Mobil 1 in powerstroke?? nope..

maybe delvac 1 if you used mobil 1 no wonder..

5w-20 is used to increase the ford's general overall fuel economy by 3% this helped them pass the fuel economy stds they have to meet in some documentation they indicated customers could use 5w-30 with no ill effects but to use 5w-20 on all back engines of the 2, 3.0 and i think the 4L is exempt i think it still has 5w-30. been 2 yrs since i looked at ford vehicle though could be wrong on engine sizes i hate fords..

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

BillyP- I just know how some poeple get "fired up" of the oil issues. I do not want a target on my back /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I had a JD and sold it for my Kubota. Ok, please stop throughing the rocks and put the guns away! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ! It was VERY hard to say goodbye to "the deere" but I needed a small tractor with backhoe" So I got the BX22.

I have now swithed 100% to Amsoil. I used Lubercation Engineers (LE) oil in another application but for the price I could not continue it. Not worth the same price for a non-synthetic oill.

My Kubota now uses Amsoil 15-40 and after 24.3 hours the oil is still clean as can be. This fall I will be doing a oil test for a baseline. My new Lexus, Suzuki GSX-R1100 (145 HP) uses it and so does my wifes car (Amsoil). she likes it so I don't have to change her oil all the time. So I have to spend more time with her. Joy ha!!!.. Kidding in case she is reading this.

The JD oil I used in my old deere turned black after 15 minutes of use. I thought it was overprice and should perform better then it did.

I was in a big debate like 5 years again at Ford-diesel.com about oils. So i did the oil test. Was very supprised with the results. SO I only used Amsoil until I fine a better oil or the same protection for lesser $$$$.

I would like to install their series 2000 oil in the front axle but it only has 65 hours on it! then again I am just busy with the FFL and now going for a class 2 FFL. Just not enough time.

PS. When I say Mobil 1 I mean Delvacin a Powerstroke Application. Plus the Mobil 1 (delvac) is poor on the turbo bearings. the high temps KILL Mobil 1 (delvac).

Lastyly, It was my understand that Ford switched due to EPA regulations.

Also I love America but our cars and trucks are poor when compared to Japan etc. I have owned a Ford 7.3 Powerstroke, 1991 mustang LX, Firebird, etc and My Lexus is by far the best with ZERO problems. Plus there service is great!

gsxr1100,

Hmmmm!!! Never mind, I think you know already.

Oh well, what the hell. Mobil 1 is good oil, there's no doubt about it. I don't think it's that good.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

5w-20 for federal fuel economy requirement.

Diesel oil is suppose to turn black because it is doing something suspending solids unlike a lot of syntehtics that have no ability to suspend solids and makes black death (not going to say names).

5w-40 delvac 1 is the best pao HDO and is superior to all other oils in hd aps. including 5w-30 and 15w-40 amsoil..

I did some comparisons 3 years ago using cat's oil checking and washed my hands of the amsoil cult at 8$ qt wow it better be made of miracle juice....

John:

You will have to forgive me, it is 5w-20, not 5w-30. Remember, now that I'm 54, I have geraritrac moments and ocassional brain farts too.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Shady:

I really don't like getting all wound up in oil discussions as they can co round and round but.......

You are right on. Not only diesels, but gas engines turn oil black because of the suspended contaminants that are produced by combustion blowby and the wearing of sliding and reciprocating parts inside the engine.

That's why Amsoil and other synthetics recommend changing the filter(s) while leaving the oil in the crankcase for an extended period. Large on road diesels, due to Federal Emmission Requirements return blowby and other contaimanents to the engine oil. Thats's why oil in DDEC engines turns black almost immediately. The same holds true with Catapillar. I have never heard of anyone that uses synthetic oil in their Class 8 Diesel. Most owners either use Shell Rotella T with XLA in the 15-40 grade, or Mobil Delvac 1200 15-40.

Would you or for that matter anyone else take a chance on destroying an engine in a $120,000 truck by using a synthetic oil? I am sure there would be a warranty issue with the engine manufacturer if you were to use a synthetic.

Besides, at 10 gallons a change, Amsoil would send you to the poorhouse in no time!!!

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

I know of one fleet and some owner/operators who used delvac 1 not sure if they still do but at $1200 for 55galo for mobil delvac 1 and a price of $19 for cat 5w-40 deo. i don't see how you can realy afford that even @ reported 1-3% fuel savings and extended change intervals on otr select engines to 100,000 with repeated oil samplings at 1/2, std, 2x and every std oil change interval thereafter...

Not to even go into the $7.95 of the amsoil product and all there filters etc.. I spent $ 300 on a chevy setup by amsoil i had used mobil 1 and did comparison even with there bypass filter i wasn't able to extend my oil change interval any more than mobil 1.

I have to agree people do get bent out of shape about oil oil is oil and it realy won't affect anything other than your pride or perspective of protection in 99% of the case study's engines are pretty stupid..
