Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Wow----I started a war here so my next post will be a statement not a question. I was in the Kubota dealer about two months ago when a good friend walked in and told me it was finally time to do an engine overhaul on his kubota because he was getting blow-by. Hours were +/- 2,500. Today he came in my store and I asked him how he made out with his engine. He said all he did was have someone hone the cylinders and put new rings on the old pistons because all was still in "SPECK" he did say they replaced the crank bearings just because they were cheap. I said "what oil are you runnin in that engine?" His reply was Mobil 1. I said "delvac 1" Nope just mobil 1. Just to thow another log on the fire Im a diehard ford man myself. I have thought of trying a duramax since my brother works for GM and I could get one for below dealer cost. I just havent gotten my nerve up to park one in my driveway /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

Since this was addressed to me, I'll answer. It's not uncommon to get 4, 5 or 6 thousand hours before a diesel tractor engine needs an overhaul.

There's no doubt that Mobil is a quality oil and you wouldn't go wrong using it. Would the same results happen, using Rotella, Mystik, Delo, (insert your brand here)? Most likely.

It's all in how you service the engine. If you abuse it, you lose it.

Re: Which oil is king? -ALL BRAND NAMES!

I agree with Billy. I've got 6000 hours on my 4020 and it's 37 years old and never had the engine touched. It still runs hard, doesn't use oil, and doesn't smoke. I'm the third owner of her so who knows how many different kinds of oil she's had. My 4430 has 9900 plus hours and again the engine has never been touched. I'm the second owner of it. I don't know what oil the first owner used. Doesn't really matter I use Rotella in everything I own as I buy it by the 55 gallon drum.

My kubota has 2100 hours. No blow by and no oil usage.

After some sage interpetations from this post I have come to a conclusion.

As the sun sets in the evening all the parameters of choice may be resolved.

As the sun rises in the morning the CEO of the marketing Division has changed all the previous parameters making all your observations obsolete.

Egon, that's a very wise conclusion /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Egon:

It has to have some blowby. If it didn't have any something would be terribly wrong!!!

Richard:

The Massey in the picture has I don't know how many hours on it. The hour meter broke about 8 years ago. It's at 5000 and my neighbor runs it all the time. Typical Massey, smokes all the time, but the engine has never been apart. He changes the oil and filters twice a crop season and uses Rotella.

TresCrows -- At least we both like the Glocks! I have the 23. 26 and just got the 28.
I just knew you was a GLOCK man /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If at 2100 hours it was showing a hint of oil consumption and a light honing was all that was needed to reseat a new set of rings then I think it could be said that that engine was in better condition than many engines with much less time and that it would have run much longer. Some people re-ring engines as maintenence. I would be one who would do such a thing, others run machines till they quit. All in all that is yet another antedotal story that means nothing and prooves nothing except that in one instance there was very little wear (still within spec) after 2000 plus hours, would there have been more wear with Rottella?--unknown and unknowable from the info presented. It may have also been that the rings never seated due to early use of synthetic oil. Not to go there again but I do believe it is beneficial to perform at least a partial breakin with conventional oil before going to full synthetic for ring seating purposes, a possible exception, modern automobiles.

Got to go play with the dogs and finish this Seabiscuit book. J
