White oak removal with B2650?

My grandpa said they dug all the stumps by hand and could do it pretty fast....... Right after they blew them up with dynamite.
Yep, that's the way most of our grandparents who worked a farm did it. Then skidded the stumps aside with horses.

Bought the dynamite at the local hardware store. Try just asking for dynamite today.

My grandpa must have used more dynamite than yours. He said they picked up the pieces by hand and put them in the cook wood pile.

If you didn't have a backhoe.... How did you dig it out?? *Gasp!* Not by.... hand.... Or did you dig it out by hand?

Just my FEL with tooth bar ! The tree was on a hill side where I am digging out for my new barn. So I had already dug out the dirt and just the tree itself was standing. The root ball was maybe 30" high x 4' diameter. I did do some hand digging to expose the big roots so I could saw them as I went. Sure wish I had a backhoe !!!!

I'm really kinda jealous that I can't still buy dynamite.

A neighbor is asking me about removing some white oaks that he had cut, he wants the root balls removed, not ground down. I implored him to call in a tree grinder guy, but he says that he's done it before and it brings insects and eventually sink holes. He is dead set on digging the balls out.

So, I have B2650 TLB and the request is that I dig them around, cut the roots, and get the balls out on the 5 trees. These are white oak, so there is some sort of a tap root sticking down in the center.

I told him I'd give it a go, start with the smallest tree and work up from there if it looks like I can do it.

My thoughts are, dig a V shaped moat around the base, picking at it to expose the major roots. Use my DeWalt reciprocating saw with timber trimming blades to cut the roots as I scratch the dirt away, get enough cut that I can get on the otherwise and push it... Hopefully getting the saw to the tap root. Then they should roll right on out.

I told him I wouldn't do it free, but I wouldn't charge much, I also told him that I'd think 7 hours for sure to do 5 roots, but it is what it is. A tried again to suggest a grinder, he's pretty dead set on digging, not grinding.

Am I insane for even thinking that this can be done with a BH77 on a B2650?

You have such a great neighbor!!! Now you have the perfect opportunity to purchase a BH77 Ripper Tooth! Have your neighbor pay for it! : )

Now there is the right idea! I have a ripper tooth, and I would not even try to dig a stump out without one.

Don't just start digging at the base of the stump, you'll get nowhere. Start about 5 feet back and work around and into the stump. Remove dirt and cut the roots as you move in.

I do it all the time at my cabin with pine. It makes a giant hole, but it's easier and faster in the long run. This works even better if the neighbor fills the hole.

With that ripper claw from BXPANDED, wouldn't you end up needing to swap from claw to bucket? Your not actually removing any material with that thing, your turning the backhoe into a razor knife with it.

I assume you jam the knife in, slice and dice real nice and then go to the bucket to remove the debris. Then go back to that knife and start over, but going another layer deeper?

You're way under on your time estimate, and the ability to lift the stump out of the hole with your machine.
