I had a 2000 1150GS. The four valve "oil heads" are not as classic looking as the old two valve airheads that you're thinking of. I had one of those too, a '77 R100RS. But the oilheads make a lot more power and are much more refined. The 1150 is a nice highway cruising machine with the tall 6th gear and roomy layout. I did a two week two up tour with my wife on mine.

Like Jay's H2 vid...... power goes up with time..... a good thing, when used responsibly :).

I've seen guards for the modern HP2's, like this one....

I like that classic air-head design.

If I ever had enough room in my bank account and garage for one, I'd want guards on the cylinders...... nobody wants to go for a slide, but I'd hate the thought of grinding down one of those jugs on the road.....

Put a lot of miles on this 1973 BMW R75/5 that I bought new from Al's Cycles in Las Vegas back in 1973. Toured every state west of the Mississippi many times and even got to see a lot of western Canada. You'll notice I had the cylinder guards on mine - they made for good foot rests also!

Nowadays, in my old age, I restrict myself to dirt roads on my little Yamaha XT225:

I got rid of my KTM 690. It was beating me up too much. My poor riding skills are to blame, but I figured it was the bike. (At least that is what I told my wife..)
A guy offered to trade his Ural for my 690, and a deal was done. So far I am having a blast with it. Really different from riding with two wheels.

Looks like a great way to cover a lot of miles !

Thanks. It's still fairly new with only 5,000 miles. Upgrading suspension and installing luggage rack/lights in a few weeks.

Have a look at the old Boxercup race series....riders competing on S model boxers, equally prepared.

Many went down scraping along on the OHV cover protector, picked the bike bac up and finished the race. The stock oilheads have OE protectors for the OHV covers and there are aftermarket covers as well. I have seen folks use duck tape, JB weld and other means to do a roadside repair after cracking an OHV cover. They seldom get damaged to the extent that you cannot repair and continue on.

Left Pic taken in 1982, thats me on the right at Crater Lake with a 1980 SR 500. Right Pic is the same Bike taken in 2018. I now look much older than the Bike does. :)sr500g.jpg

Interesting copy of airhead on the Ural. It’s a Russian copy of a 1938 BMW design. ( 750 cc)
The Russians haven’t really improved it from 1940s. My GSAdventure has a water cooled boxer 1200 (2014). The new ones are 1250cc. I’m told they are like rockets.

I have been looking at getting another bike for a couple years now. This one is a 2013 and the one I had almost bought before buying my CVO Road King instead. Well, I came across this one with 4000 miles on it today and decided I needed it.

Aside from the snake, that XT looks like fun :)

A mature rider posted on ADVrider about taking a sabbatical from Yamaha USA, to go rideabout. What he chose for the trip was one of their 250 dual sports.

Big adventure bikes sell well, but if you have some appreciation of the physical conditioning required for a motocross rider to be competitive, they won't be your first choice for serious off-roading.
