who wants a Humvee?

A hummer with the 5.9 Cummins now that would be something

I used to work for a company that drove military hummers out of the AM General plants in South Bend and Mishawaka, IN to rail spurs all over northern Indiana for shipment. So I've probably driven several hundred of them. All were diesels. Don't know which engine. It was early-mid 1980's. Sometimes we'd put a towbar on and get two-fer the price of one driver. They'd hold 55 on the highway while towing another hummer. They were slow. But they had good power. Sometimes we'd "take a wrong turn" in the parking field and "accidentally" end up on AM Generals off-road testing grounds... this is at their South Bend, IN plant.
Here's the paved test track...
Google Maps
What you don't see is in the lower, left woods is a couple miles of hills, mud, swamps, obstacles, etc...
It was very hard to get them stuck.
Several times we'd fall through the gaps between rail cars when someone would forget to pin the ramps between the cars of forget to set the car brakes and the rail cars would move away from each other, dropping the ramp. The Hummer would drop onto its frame. We'd engage the front axle, put it in low and back up out of the gap no problem.
For a few thousand dollars, it would make a fun farm truck, for sure. But as mentioned, they are ridiculously wide compared to a jeep. And they have this huge console-type bump between the seats. They only sit 4 people, but for a farm truck, who cares? I'd think about it if I needed such a toy.

Government was allowing a 100,000 write off in one year at one time. Sister made a bunch of money at the number four dealership in sales. Ranchers and bigtime sports stars all had to have one back then.

That was for the commercial units, which these are not.

My mother-in-law worked on both the military and commercial lines at AM General. She met the Terminator when he came to pick his up. He was the one that was instrumental in getting AM General to go into commercial production of the H1.

I recall the commercial version had the 350 v8 as an option in the early 90s. I think it accelerated highway speed in just over half the time of the diesel.

From this article...
Hummer H1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Currently, five engine types and three automatic transmission types can be found in Hummer H1s. The common engine/automatic transmission combinations are:

6.2 L GM Diesel V8/GM TH400/3L80 3-speed
6.5 L GM Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
5.7 L Vortec 5700 gasoline V8 TBI/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
6.5 L turbo GM Diesel V8/GM 4L80-E 4-speed
6.6 L turbo Duramax LLY V8 turbo Diesel/Allison 1000 5-speed (model year 2006)"

Also,

"They are inherently very stable, thanks to their wide track. They can ford 30 inches (76 cm) of water and climb a 22-inch (56 cm) step. Their stock ground clearance of 16 inches (41 cm) is made possible by tucking driveline components inside a channel in the central space between the left and right seats. They have high approach/departure angles of 72/37.5 degrees. Most H1s are equipped with a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS), which enables the driver to increase or decrease the tire air pressure at the push of a button, since lower tire pressures are more suited for off road, and higher tire pressures are desirable on-road.

Hummer H1s have many unusual features, such as inboard brakes and portal gears which allow the drivetrain's half shafts a higher placement, for greater ground clearance. The radiator is up high, sloping over the engine on a forward-hinged hood. The air intake is high-mount, enabling the H1 to ford waist-level water. Rather than using simple runflat tires, magnesium-aluminum alloy or rubber inserts are an optional feature for runflat ability."

Better build a bigger barn Drew. Should pull the Boat you know you want too.

Nope

I thought about getting one quite a few years ago but the towing capacity of even the H1 was too low. Way lower than 1/2 tons today.

Their TOW capacity is good, their towing capacity is poor.

From another board:
Anyway in answer to your quiz, the manuals list the specs for the regular HMMWV versions which all have the under 10000 GVW at around 3500 lbs gross towed load give or take. The Heavy Hummers, HHV, ECV, Civ H1 etc which all have the 10K GVW and above, and heavy duty components are rated for around 4500 lbs towed load give or take. These are mil conservative numbers and are very safe for any distance including off highway. <snip>

The bottom line is that with a load of around 8000 lbs as you state (7600 plus some +- stuff thrown on the trailer) and a trailer weighing around 2000-3000 depending on whether it is AL or steel, you are looking at 10-11 K GTW which is TOO MUCH for a Humvee to tow unless you are talking low speed local roads for short 25 mile trips. More than that and you need a 5 ton 800 series or 900 series truck with the Cummins or Mack to do it right. You could use a deuce but when towing 10K lbs dont plan on over 45 MPH on the highway. The deuce will handle the load, control wise, but will be even slower than the Humvee due to being grossly underpowered for the whole Gross Combination Weight Rating which will be in the 23-24K lbs range. Sorry if this was long but I wanted to give you some detailed hard info based on around 40 years experience doing this with all of the above vehicles.

Their TOW (tube-launched, optically-tracked, wireless-guided) capacity is far better than my truck, but I can't justify a weapon system.

Most of the ones I see in auctions are listed as something like

DEMIL Code "F". CARC paint (Chemical agent resistant coating), please have hazmat disposal plan on file before bidding.
DEMIL Code "Q". Requires mutilation inside the United States before disposal.

In other words, you are not allowed to keep it in one piece, you cannot sell the pieces, you must strip the toxic paint and dispose of it correctly and the destroy the pieces once clean to recover the crap metal value.

If these interpretations aren't accurate, I wouldn't mind looking into an LMTV...

Been a while since you looked hasn't it?

Those
interpretations aren't accurate

They changed the rules. Often they put in the ad
***Buyer will need to complete and submit a Hold Harmless Agreement before scheduling pickup.***No further demilitarization is required. The HMMWV is available for pick up as shown.***

Look at Govt. Planet where 284 are listed TODAY.

But as I wrote earlier they are worth if IF you can get the right attachments, like bullet proofing, a TOW or a .50 cal pedestal :) Sort of like a tractor you really need the attachments. :) They were not designed for off-roading in just safe situations.
