I've read several forums on the FEL mower mounted with PTO/hydraulic conversions. Got me to thinking...Why can't I get a used swisher finish mower with its own motor and fab up a mount for the loader and mow up a bank. Bad idea? I'm up for a creative solution. Thanks in advance!

Really if you think about it you could do that with any motorized mower deck...you could fabricate a used riding mower to attach to the FEL....Sure , I see no reason why it won't work and work well.

Are there any threads I missed regarding an idea such as this?

That's right. I remember a TBN pic of an unmanned riding mower mowing a ditch, suspended from a FEL.

Sorry, no pix - I have a 60" swisher, I wouldn't waste your money. Too underpowered - has a 13 horse motor that should be 22.

I hung it using chains from the loader on a Case 580 backhoe - two chains to two rear corners of the mower frame from loader arms themselves, two chains to two front corners of the mower frame from the chain hooks on loader bucket.

Hanging from chains that way let me use bucket curl to conform to whatever slope.

Concept worked ok, underpowered mower stalled, couldn't hear whether it was running over noise from the backhoe.

Still have the mower, if my ZTR ever quits and the 22 horse Kawasaki twin's still good, I may try an engine swap.

You might get away with it if you don't expect too much... Steve

A 4 cycle engine might not last very long. 2 cycle would work great.

I picked up a 60"swisher finish mower that I pull behind a 4 wheeler to mow about 5 acres. Works good IF it is already short. For cutting high grass or weeds a flail mower does a LOT better.

JW, I agree completely - that's why my swisher sits in the shed and the 6' flail is usually on one or the other tractor :=) Steve

What can I find with a two cycle engine that has a decent cutting path?

Good question - only thing I've seen is normal sized walk behinds. Whether you need a 2-cycle would depend on what type of bank you're wanting to mow. If it's vertical, trying to use a 4-cycle would likely run the engine out of oil (bad) - if the bank is less than maybe 30 degrees, you might get away with it.

Your comment about a USED mower probably negates this alternative

But if that's not too expensive, it is easily adapted to nearly any angle with a bit of thought and some square tubing, etc... Steve
