Why do Diesels last longer than IC's?

Try these for starters. Biodeisel as they are calling it is becoming quite popular. People are hassling restaurants for their waste oil. One guy is using it in his late model turbo 4WD.

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

Hi ya
found this for ya's
Oilseed oil burner
Deutz-Fahr is working on a tractor engine for its Agrotron range that can operate on pure pressed rapeseed oil, rather than processed biodiesel. The project, on show at Agritechnica, will allow farmers to crush home-grown rapeseed on-farm and use the 'crude' fuel oil in their own tractor but without needing to send it to a processing plant.
A number of engine mods must be put in position to handle crude rapeseed oil, says Deutz-Fahr, because the liquid is of a thicker viscosity than biodiesel. Main area of change is in the fuel injection set-up. When the system becomes available as an option for tractors on the German market, it is expected to add a further DM14,000 (approx £4,700) to the list price, depending on model.

don't know how many miles to the acre ya get tho may have to rip up ya lawn to run the tractor,,,bit of a flash back realy ever heard "grow the oats to feed the horses to grow the oats to feed the horses........... etc etc"will it be grow the rape to fuel the tractor to grow the rape?????
catch ya

jdKid:
Years ago when South Africa was under trade embargos did they not do extensive work on using vegtable/grain oils for diesel engines?

As for longevity of engines in the industrial world I have seen some 1500 hp. two cycle natural gas engines with integral natural gas positive displacement compressors That have run almost continuously for the last 50+ years only being down for repairs or scheduled maintenance. Now these would be small engines compared to those used in a marine enviroment.

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

hey JDkid......look in ya back yard for this technology......oilseed burning machinery........this is how the oilseed rape extraction plant was orginially installed behind southfert at bluff......there was a time it was used for fuel production......but it cost too much......now its used for cooking oil extraction.......could go back to fuel again

this is an interesting thread........with more variables/deviations than a singles sex party......

you must consider use of the machine, ignition temp of the fuel, quality of the steel, design, operation temp etc.........service intervals (slackness of these), air temperatures, air quality, yada yada yada

my theory is every vehicle is a good vehicle, it just appears bad when the operator exceeds the designed purpose/limits

maybe its common for diesel engines to have a 'designed' lifespan greater than that of a petrol engine

if they build them too reliable they won't get any back up service........

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

Hi All,

I'm sorry, that my english is not good enough, to declare You the fortake of the Diesel-engines.
The fact is, that the Diesel has a Self-ignition, it needs no Spark-plug. The piston only will comprime Air up to 22:1, the air is getting hot, and the fuel will be injected in the hot air.
A gas-engine will comprime 8:1 and needs an ignition on other ways. For this high-pressure in the engine You need stronger material, like bearings a.s.o.. An Example: We have a Ford-Transit Diesel Van 2,5l with 75HP, it needs 7,5l Diesel/100km(appr. 2gal. at 70mls) our Opel Omega Wagon , 2l, 115HP needs 11l unleaded fuel/100km(appr. 3,5gal/70mls).
You get not so much power per cubicinch from a Diesel like from a Gasengine. I hope You understand my kind of declairing. If not I gonna try agin with a dictonary by my side;) .
Every newer Diesel engine in Germany is able to run on rapsseede, You'll get it here at some Gasoline-Stations, it is 10cents cheaper like regular Diesel, which is 10 cents cheaper than regular fuel .

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

Bernhard,
Is the rape-seed oil they sell in Germany mixed with diesel or is it pure refined rape-seed oil? We have a product they call bioldiesel which is (I think) 10% sunflower oil mixed with diesel.
In Australia diesel is 10 cents more expensive than petrol. It is very hard to get commercially available organic fuel oil.

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

Hi Yaouk,

The Biodiesel in Germany is pure Raps, no Dieselmix.
Years ago Eicher built a tractor with a 3cyl 108HP Elsbett-Rapsoil-engine.
If german Farmers grow Raps, they get Subventions from the EC.
We have a lot of Diesel-cars here. Every Manufacturer has some in his range. Every heavy Truck run Diesel, some busses also with Rapsoil. Par Example the Bus-Service of our area turned over to burn only Rapsoil in their busses, and save a lot of money by doing this.

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

I'll throw my 2 bob in the ring here.....

Yes the 300k is a magic figure here but I am referring to 300,000 km not miles !!

I know of a hilux here with a 2.4litre diesel engine with 350,000 km on it with no work ever having been done to it except some minor injection system overhalls. Still going fine.

But then our new Ford Falcons with a 4 litre 6 cyl petrol engine in taxis are getting well over 300,000km out of them too.

I think modern petrol engines will last just as long as a diesel providing they are treated correctly.

I'd still prefer a turbo diesel in my 4x4 (which I have) because you have reasonable power with low fuel costs, plus they will take a lot of water crossings etc. as long as a snorkel if fitted.

My 2 bob etc.

Cheers

There is some reason that a diesel can handle water crossings better than a gas engine? Why is that?
