Looks good enough for govt' work.

All of us are too hard on our own painting skills. I know it's hard to see detail in a pic.. but seriously.. looks decent.. I'd have no qlualms about bolting up what I see.

Soundguy

Any time I go to do anything, I set a timetable as to when I SHOULD be at a reasonable level of skill or success. After the first tractor I painted, about 7 years ago, I had it "planned" to be 99.9% "perfect" by now. Ain't happenin'. So far, I've painted ONE hood that didn't have some minor flaw in it. It's not that difficult. And the sad part? All my mistakes have been avoidable. And in most cases, I should have known better that to make the mistakes I did. (Sounds like my youth.....?????)

Oh well

Before leaving for work this morning I unrolled the decals to let them uncurl. The wife is taking the dawgs to the vets office this afternoon. While she's gone I'm starting to put everything back together. What doesn't get done tonight I'll finish in the morning.

Headed south about 50 miles tomorrow to pick up a set of Massey wheel weights. They bolt to the INSIDE of the rear wheels. I've got 2 pairs of the outside weights. Later this summer I'm having new tires put on the back. Fluid goes bye-bye. Cast weights will come with-in 25 lbs each side.

Bill
If my memory is correct even the when the MF's were new the paint
job was not perfect.
From what I see in the pictures it looks OK.
One last point you are older now and it only gets worse.

I'm not impressed.....My painting skills that is. I've got one little spot that didn't turn out just right. That's it though. Final try.

FWJ: the results look fine to me. Hope my MF-135 paint job turns out as nice.

Tell me again which paint, paint activator and paint gun you're using.

Thanks

It's a PPG product. Primer, reducer, activator, and paint are all designed as a compatable system. It's acrylic enamel. I was considering a uerathane (sp?) finish. That would have been a "tougher" finish, but required even more prep, plus the fact that the ORIGINAL paint was enamel. I wanted "original look".

I use a Sharpe "Platinum" gun for finish coating. I have a "Huskee" gun from Home Depot that's my primer gun and for spraying finish on implements. (Don't want to wear out the "expensive" gun) Both are HVLP gravity feed guns. MUCH easier for a novice to use. (You paint with much less air pressure. Less overspray, less orange peel, less wasted paint, easier clean-up)

45% of a paintjob "tuning out OK" is the result of choosing the correct reducer (thinner) for climate conditions and surface conditions of what you're about to paint. Another 45% is preparation of that surface. Last 10% is pure dumb luck in my case.

My best "trick" for a good paint job? Befriend someone at an automotive paint supply store. Get the skinny on paints and associated supplies directly from them. Most of us "hack amature painter wanna-be's" will know just barely enough to get you in trouble. Let an expert tell you what fillers/primers/paint/reducer/hardeners/supplies you need to have NO adverse reactions between incompatable products.

It's not always what you KNOW, sometimes it's what you DON'T know that's the most important.

No time to post all the pictures so far, but here's a quickie af the hood installed. My wife and I installed it last night. She helped with the decals. We're still married this morning, so everything must have gone OK.

Yes, my truck and tractor are a match! I didn't even realize that until I'd had the truck for a year. (Old paint on the tractor was rusty red and worn out grey...Didn't match anything)

It's 63 degrees here today. ON THE 16TH of DEC! Incredable weather! So, it was a perfect opportunity to pull the tractor back outside in the sun while I cleaned out the shop. Painting is dirty work. Sand 1/2 the old paint off. Prime, sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, THEN paint (with all the overspray). When it's dry, you pull off all the masking paper and tape. Gotta shine things up a bit before continueing.

Here's 3 pics; #1 is looking down the FINISHED hood. #2 is right side panel. In a few days, the "lower pennensula" part of the red panel will get 2-toned with the grey (flint grey metallic) #3 is the right side. OK. No more pictures untill the fenders come off.
