On a sidenote, school delayed for 2 hours tomorrow. No snow, but my wife tells me (she's on the FTO board) that the school is afraid of having the kids out at the bus stop with the wind chill below 20. Heck, I'm out there in shorts with my kids EVERY morning:laughing:

You guys make me laugh with all the searching for something you can take offense to.

I'll stand by my statement that implied southern drivers on ice are more dangerous than northern drivers on snow. They're more dangerous than Northern drivers on ice too. It's not because Northerners are better drivers than "southerners". There are good and bad drivers everywhere. However, most northerner drivers have more experience driving in snowy or icy conditions than people from down here, and it helps some. All those slalom runs in the parking lot are a good teacher, and the studded hakkapeliitta's sure help too.

If'n y'all had better reading comprehension skills, and hadn't been in such a rush to get your panties in a bunch, you'd have noticed I also said I thought North Carolina's response to closing schools for snow and ice was reasonable.

As a true NC boy, Born here and will die here. Us locals always wonder why the Yankees come here by the 100,000 per year. Possibly because you could get a job, or pay less in taxes. I have good advice for you. Stop complaining and GO HOME. Back where life is good.

Same here from SC. If it's so great up north, why move.

ANYONE is dangerous on ice, I don't know of any vehicle or driver that handles good on it. I was involved in a 10 car pile up on a bridge in Mattydale (just outside of Syracuse). In a gym in Syracuse, I had a guy telling me how great his new jeep 4x4 handled on ice (total idiot).

In snow? Driving from Mercer Pa on I 80 to the 81 exit on I-80, on Christmas eve going home to see my parents, a 5 hour drive (about 3.5 hours on I-80 if I remember correctly) took me 9 hours. Driving a Toyota 4x4, in 4 wheel drive, going about 45 miles a hour for a good 2 hours, I had about 10 cars/trucks pass me out that had to be doing over 55 on a hard pack of snow in the passing lane, and guess how many cars I came across in a ditch? NEVER stopped for the idiots.

West Virginia, always snow in winter, bottom of Coppers Rock on I68 there was ALWAYS a 4x4 stuck at the bottom of the hill as they ALWAYS went to fast going downhill, had a decent curve in the road to go up hill, and the 4x4 weight would always drag it into a ditch. It wasn't until I was about 30 that I learned that even in 4 wheel drive, going around a corner on hard pack snow, your trucks weight will make you slide right off.

You want to know how many people I've seen "up north" drive over a wet, cold (right around 32 degrees) bridge only to hit their breaks ON THE BRIDGE and then end up sliding? You think people would know something that simple.

ANYONE who has 4 wheel drive thinks their impervious to bad snow conditions. What they forget to realize is that 4 wheel drive does nothing for you when you hit the breaks. Probably more northern mommas driving SUV's who end up in ditches than southern mommas LOL

I've come to the conclusion that smart people drive VERY slow in bad weather, or don't drive at all.

For what it's worth, all my children were born in NC, and I do sincerely hope they move anywhere they want OUT of state. I think any person should go out a live and experinece new states /areas instead of staying in one area for their whole life.

What's kind of sad IMO is that my young boys are already use to traveling out of state to visit places, and there are some kids in cub scouts that have NEVER left the state for anything. Also had some GROWN adults in NC NOT know where States are located at in the US. THAT is sad.

Our county had a two hour delay today because of the cold.

I can see being cautious with ice on the road and I have no problem if the schools delay opening for road conditions but delaying because of wind chill? Really? I don't see kids standing waiting for a bus. Parents take them to the bus stop in a car and wait for the bus. Unlike when I was a kid and we stood in the freaking cold. But we were not out side for more than a few minutes. We knew when the bus would arrive and we would leave the house so we would not stand outside for too long in the cold. We were not stoopid.:laughing::laughing:

You will LOVE the gun laws in NC. Anything for a rifle other than auto, and about a year wait now for a suppressor. Get a cc permit, and buy whatever pistol you want on the spot (with 10 minute background check) on a handgun. No mag restrictions whatsoever.

We do that one better. If you've got a permit, you don't have to wait on the check, they just copy your permit number on the 4473. Kentucky automatically runs all permit holders through NCIC every 6 months.

I was wondering if people in the South typically run an All Terrain or Mud&Snow tire on their vehicles? If everyone is running Summer tires I can see where a little snow and ice would cause chaos. When I was recently looking for new tires for my wife's car it seemed that a lot/all of the less-pricey choices were Summer which would be pretty useless up here.

I agree with you 100% except for the last northern mammas paragraph. I actually think it's young guys in the SUVs that get cocky about snow and ice. I wouldn't own a vehicle without 4wd, or at least AWD anymore. I like having the traction option, but I don't think it makes my SUV safer than a FWD car. It's just less likely to get stuck.

I have always considered it one of the great blessings of my life that I had an aunt living in rural Minnesota where we went on a winter pilgrimage every few years. Even before I got my learner's permit, I was allowed to drive out on the frozen lakes. Never was there a better place to learn how to start/stop/handle every kind of skid imaginable. Spent most of the time figuring out new and creative ways to START skids! Tons of fun, but driving lessons I have never forgotten.
