Sometimes I think the same thing. All of my family in very nearby, sometimes too nearby. But then again it comes in handy and i don't have to travel for holidays.

Most of these 4x4 trucks greasy side up in a snowy ditch. Are usually shod with a set of wide mud mother summer tires. They harden up and don't grip in the cold. The wide tire floats on the ice and snow instead of cutting in like a narrow tire.

I'm in Mississippi right now - brrrrrr. A few flurries this morning, but no problem. North Carolina, eh? That word, "north" in it's name makes me cold!
Y'all boys up north, come on down! I've already got neighbors from Minnesota (whew, now that's a COLD one!), New York, and recently, Connecticut.

Schools out. Guess my kids will be home alone in 45 minutes while I go drive down to Cary to pick up something off craigslist. I expect very little traffic, but will drive slowly anyway! No snow tires these days 
Looking for a exciting job. One or more can probably be found here when the parental blood letting stops over the great 2014 "Schools Open" fiasco.

The school I work at was closed @ 1:30 yesterday but I hung around until after 2 or so...
My wife works in Hickory and I wanted to make sure she made it home OK...
The major roads here in Catawba County were sprayed with brine and they were passable yesterday afternoon...
But all schools are closed today...
Some businesses are opening up around 10 or so but very little melting will occur until after noon...
Good thing about living here is that the temps Sunday will be in the 60's...
What little snow and ice we get usually does not last too long...

Says someone who is too young to have experienced (or too old to remember) the winter storms that struck NC in 1960.
I grew up in Iredell County, and we had significant snow/sleet on three consecutive Wednesdays in March. No school, perfect sledding conditions -- those were the days.

Remember the 21 inches we got in 2001. Man, the roads were messed up for over a weeks. My friend at work had a ford dually and he got recruited for taxi service for several days to get folks to and from work.

One kid went to school for two hours yesterday and the other for a half day. I don't really get the two hour school day. The only thing that makes sense is that the schools get "paid" if they are open. I don't have a problem with the schools being cautious with openings because one freak snow a few years ago hit mid afternoon. The snow could not be cleared because of the normal traffic and the snow was packed down into ice. The snow amount was maybe an inch but it was compacted to a sheet of ice very quickly. Kids were stuck at school or worse in school buses. I knew people stuck overnight in cars because of the gridlock. Roads on hills were impassible for most cars and once people lost traction and movement things just ground to a halt. What a mess.
To make the storm even freakier it had snowed just in the Raleigh area. I had to drive through a bit of ice but as I headed out of the metropolis the snow thinned out and by the time I got home only the grass had a bit of snow. The storm had hit the worst possible spot. If it had snowed 10-20 miles east or west it, the storm would not have been much of anything. It just hit at the most perfect, worse spot.
Through the power of the Internet, thank goodness we have power, the major roads look mostly clear on the traffic cameras. Back roads are a different story. The roads were salted on Monday but it is not supposed to get above freezing today and tonight will go down to 7! I don't think the roads are going to clear until Thursday afternoon when it gets to 37! Break out the swim suits!
The weekend will be back to normal NC temps thank goodness.
