Why I hate North Carolina

I was wondering if people in the South typically run an All Terrain or Mud&Snow tire on their vehicles?
Mud/Snow tires are no substitute for real snow tires (with the mountain and snowflake on the side). We have M&S tires on a '97 Dodge 1500 4x4 and Nokian snow tires my '97 Volvo V90 (RWD wagon). As long as the snow isn't deep enough to high center the car, my Volvo will go anywhere (on snow) that the truck will go and grip the road better while doing it.

I have always considered it one of the great blessings of my life that I had an aunt living in rural Minnesota where we went on a winter pilgrimage every few years. Even before I got my learner's permit, I was allowed to drive out on the frozen lakes. Never was there a better place to learn how to start/stop/handle every kind of skid imaginable. Spent most of the time figuring out new and creative ways to START skids! Tons of fun, but driving lessons I have never forgotten.
For smaller scale fun, I take a golf cart out on the lawn when we have ~2" of snow on the ground and practice skids and skid recovery. Works very well as there is enough torque from the electric motor to break the back end loose anytime you want.

I was wondering if people in the South typically run an All Terrain or Mud&Snow tire on their vehicles? If everyone is running Summer tires I can see where a little snow and ice would cause chaos. When I was recently looking for new tires for my wife's car it seemed that a lot/all of the less-pricey choices were Summer which would be pretty useless up here.

At least in our snow state some people (me included) have 2 sets of tires and wheels for their 4x4 vehicles .
In the winter most run Studded snow tires. The studs on all 4 tires can be life savers on ice.. and in some conditions a set of chains as back-up for deep snow helps to. Driving on ice without studs is less safe. just my :2cents:

Yep. Great where they're allowed. Loud though if there's no snow.

Years ago my dad and I bought and mounted studded Hakkapelliittas on my wife's honda odyssey without telling her. My dad said he had to keep his grandchildren safe.

My wife came back after her first drive thinking something was broken on the car. Studded tires on some roads are even louder than when my front wheel bearing was going bad, but they seem worth it for the extra safety if you have lots of glare ice. Just have to remember they don't stop as well on dry or wet roads with the studs in, so it's still a compromise.

My wife didn't believe in dedicated snow tires until she was slipping and sliding all of the road on her 1 year old "All Seasons" and I installed a set of snows... She now insists that I put her snows on by Thanksgiving and her FWD Caravan will hold the road better than her Mom's AWD Hyundai Santa Fe with "All Season" tires.

I guess you could call them M&S tires.I have TOYO Open Country Tires on my 2500... I couldn't tell you how well they would perform in snow. We haven't had enough to cover the roads since I've had the truck/tires

That's a key point to remember. I always ran winter tires (Blizzaks) in New England from Dec-March, since we'd see snowy roads on a weekly basis back then. But down here in VA, I only encounter winter driving 5-6 days a year. That means there's about 110 days during the season where winter tires would be less safe on dry roads. So I've never thought it made sense to get winter tires here, even when I was skiing 40+ days a year and chasing powder days. If money/time was not an object, I'd have a set to swap on-demand, but that's not the case.

Yeah, Got to get to the store B-4 all the milk and bread is gone..... I never understood this:confused3:

In some cases the bread is to keep the light dusting bound southerners alive. The milk is for a rare treat in the south, SNOW ICE CREAM.

Its supposed to snow here today and everything is shutting down early. What will we southerners do? All may be lost!

the only reason i hated n.c. when we lived there 30 years ago, was that it was so far from family. 12 hr drive sucked. now, i'm older and wiser and most times i think 12 hours would be too close.;)
