Why is it so hard to find a decent or good deal these days?

Don't forget the Cash For Clunkers program. Many decent used vehicles suddenly left the marketplace. My one son had what by all accounts was a nice GMC Jimmy that the taxpayers "invested" more than it would have been worth on the normal market so it could be removed from the streets in order for him to drive a new Toyota. What a farce.

My buddy sells used cars professionally. Thanks to cash for clunkers and nobody leasing anymore the cars for his two most profitable market segments (almost new and really used) pretty much vanished thus raising prices on used stuff. My 2002 diesel truck is worth more now than it was in 2010 according to him because of the new dpf systems killing fuel mileage. He says pro haulers are keeping their old trucks running until this emissions business gets sorted out mechanically.

Hey Mitch, looks like you did what everyone else is trying to do.
I would say you made out like a bandit. Don,t you think you should have basically given that thing away since you used it for seven years, and it cost you 1200.00 bucks. How come you needed to make so much profit ??? LOL

You beat me to it.

That guy that bought your skidd steer probably posted a whine somewhere about how he had to pay $3200 for a $1200 skidd steer.lol

I don't agree on that point.

We are seeing a reduction of products in the market.
That is what the OP is lamenting.

That will drive the price up.
If we get the economy going, and various products become more plentiful, we should see prices come down.

People fail to understand or acknowledge that when something is sold, the seller wants to get the most and the buyer wants to pay the least. Somewhere in the middle is an agreement / sale.

We need to add to the equation the economic position of both. Does the seller 'need' the money from the sale. Does the buyer have to borrow the money or does he have 'cash in hand'.

The $400 purchase to $3200 sale expresses this state in our economy very well.

With all respect to you all,

Mike

Before you could take a drive down to the country side and guaranteed your find a good or very fair deal on used equiptment and/or automobiles. Just sitting in the front drive way with a for sale sign. Now everyone is greedy and pushing every penny they can. I blame programs today like storage wars, pawn stars etc... giving the general puplic a new outlook for private sales. Example I bought a used 1980's bobcat in the early 2000's for $400 from a dairy farmer. I enjoyed this machine and when i wanted to sell it in 2007 I got $3200 for it very easily but then again I put about $800 in parts and paint in it. So whats with this? People thinking there entrepreneurs and haggling.

Do you think that was a fair price for that farmers Bocat? Greed works both side of the fences, I like to think people are a little more aware of the value on items they may own nowadays thanks to some TV's shows, and the sweat of their brow.

Ya' think?

I would consider him to be a self centered opportunist, not unlike most buyers/sellers. The question I would have is why he considers this to be any different from trading for time and memorial.

So some of you think that if I buy an item at a fraction of it's worth then I should sell it the same way? Why would anyone do a stupid thing like that? The seller got the price he wanted. What is done with the item after that has no bearing on what was paid for it. What it sells for has no bearing on what it was bought for.
I bought the Montana in my signature for about 1/3 of it's worth and I'll probably have an extra $1000 in it before I decide to sell or trade it in. When that time comes I expect to get a little less than 3 times what I have in it and I won't feel bad about it at all because the buyer will be getting a deal just not as good as I got.

To answer the title of the post... Yes, it's harder to find a deal but if you look long enough and in enough places you can still find them.
