Except Cummins is own company that just powers dodge/ram. And if it wasn’t for Cummins dodge/ram would probably be defunct because they didn’t have much else to offer.

7.6 liter (462 cubic inch Pontiac) in my 2600lb Mazda "ex" Rotary RX7
Not as much torque as a 6.7 but more than my 03 5.9 H.O. Cummins at 555 lb ft.
We call it the Mazdarati
Heavy on the ratty.

Well, except that they build trucks that exceed Ford & Chevy on towing specs and come standard with longer power train warranties.
But who cares about warranties? Or who uses trucks for towing anymore?

And without Cummins they still have nothing to offer. If Ford had of dropped a Cummins in their pickups and avoided the 6.0/6.4 crisis they would have owned the pickup market back then and today. If you could have gotten a Ford Cummins nobody would have bought a dodge/ram because the rest of the Ford was way better.

I’m not talking about the truck they make now. I said if Ford dropped a Cummins in their trucks 20 years ago that Dodge/ram trucks would probably be defunct. If they weren’t completely gone they definitely wouldn’t have the market share they have today. I still think Ford makes a better truck but back then they definitely did. If Ford didn’t like Cummins they should have used a DT360. They weren’t that different from a 5.9 and much more reliable than the 6.0 or 6.4.

But they didn’t because they weren’t smart.
A DT360 is not capable of making the HP todays modern horsepower warfare demands. Maybe a DT466, but neither have been made for years, so it doesn’t really matter and Ford chose not to. I bet IH would have been more than happy to sell Ford all the DT466’s they wanted. IH couldn’t make an after treatment system in 2012 so none of that matters anymore, either.

Dodge/Ram was smart and went with a proven winner. Now their trucks are as good or better and have a longer warranty for years.

Anyway, we are off topic.

Back to the towing capacity part a Ford 450 is rated to tow 37k while a ram 4500 is only rated to 29k. A 550 ford is rated to 32k and a 5500 is rated to 35k. Why a 450 is rated to tow more than the 550 is beyond me. The fairly new released F-600 would appeal to me more then those trucks for the extra bed payload. The 5500 with a diesel, 4x4 and the shortest wheelbase is rated 10,500k payload where the F600 with the same package is rated at 14k.

2020 Ram 5500 crew cab cummins GCWR 43,000.

F-600 is only available as regular cab. I much prefer a crew cab.
Cummins is just a better puller, too.

I dont mess with newer fords but the 90s fords were years behind the dodge. Worse front suspension design ever. Only good part of the ford was the sheet metal doesnt run. Motors were junk, yes even a 7.3, suspension was junk, frames have more flex than the suspension flexes
