Why not just get a Unimog??

Really? Coil springs in each corner, 30degree flex in the frame load sensing brakes, I find mine quite comfortable, and the suspension to be years ahead of its time. Compared to any other truck its size the suspension is top notch.

They are what they are and like most multi-tasking, general purpose vehicles there are always specific purpose vehicles that can do certain tasks better. I like a lot of listers would love to have one, however, for what I need a utility tractor is better suited for my needs. Plus I am not found of repairing and working on mechanical apparatus, rather I do it out of necessity as it is much cheaper to do repair/maintenance work than to pay someone else to do it. I do enjoy tractor seat time for the most part and take great satisfaction from "terraforming" my place and making it better from my point of view. I can appreciate the talent and satisfaction from building something and/or restoration of machinery and I am glad there are people that take great pleasure from that. I have never used a unimog, but I sure wouldn't turn down the opportunity if presented!

Happy New Year

KYdan hit it on the head. Like a Swiss Army knife, it can do nearly anything, however, a dedicated tool for that task will do it much better with few exceptions.

Just as the leather awl on a swiss army knife will do the job, a dedicated leather awl will always do the job better.

A 'mog with a backhoe will never be as efficient as a dedicated backhoe, however, if you need to zip to a jobsite at 80+km/h, the mog is the answer.

However, some of the things the Unimog excels at are things like snow clearing, and mowing:

Also, they are untouchable offroad.

I've always thought the Unimogs were super neat vehicles. I've been looking at them a lot lately.
I've been thinking in the future maybe I should get a Unimog instead of a factory cab tractor.

So why couldn't I sell both & get a unimog to do everything plus more?
I know they are expensive but so is a decent sized factory cab tractor & you can't drive it on th eroad or anything.

Anyone else ever thought of this?

I'm a little late to the dance, But I did just get down to my 'County' place, and snapped some photos. Hey! I don't even know this guy, but it's an '85, with a 100hp Mercedes-Benz. Really didn't look bad. But I'd bet it's 'pricey'! The Area Code is 716. Happy New Year! ~Scotty

I currently have 3.

Don't be fooled, while most Unimogs are happy at 88km/h, you can get Ambulance, firetruck, police, or other models with the high speed axles. My RW1 (rescue truck) will do 109km/h (68mph) in 16th gear, it has 16fwd, and 16 reverse gears, so yes, it goes as fast backwards as it does forwards. You can get mogs with up to 24 gears, with a splitter that's 48 gears, super crawler goes as low as 4000:1

Mogs are available with 3 PTO's, Front, Rear, and mid-mount (side PTO in the old models) the Mid mount is a high speed PTO for running high flow hydraulics for things like picker cranes etc. Combined with a front or rear 3pt hitch, full 240bar hydraulics, and nearly any accessory, they are very handy.

They are favored among German and UK farmers, as well as forestry, mining, and nearly any industry that you can think of.

My Rescue truck returns an honest 15mpg highway driving, for a 1988 136hp, 13,000lb vehicle, I think that's pretty good.

That rescue truck is cool. Here is a more modern day Unimog based fire apparatus in the US:

Kyle,

Thanks for the picture of the U500, do you know what department its at? Here's some other firemogs, note the one with the "Self Preservation" system, sprays the outside of the truck to keep heat out in a field fire situation.

I'm a square cab fan myself. My personal favorite (and I aspire to own) is the last 4 pictures, the Green Police Doka, equip with a Crane, front end loader with grapple bucket, with quick swap pallet forks, a Werner forestry winch for recovery (pulls forwards or rearwards), rear ground anchor for the winch, roof top air conditioning, and many other options, well optioned unimog!

Thanks for the pics!

The unit I posted belongs to the Brookings, SD fire department, Actually, I had read they had a lot of problems with the unit. Something along the lines of the body being too big...

That police unit sure is cool!

You need a Unimog, CTF!!
Since they have cabs, at least you wouldn't get covered with goose crap when you're chasin' them...
