why so few of the (larger) 1600/1700 tractors talked about on here?

As far as your specific question about power, I don't know if the '52s can be tuned up, but then again, the '55s and '60s are the exact same engine, so it must be possible. BTW, I run into the same problem with my tractor not having the power to do much other than travel (unloaded) in high range. That's about all it's good for.

Yeah, I can groom with the rake in High, and I can do a little snow plowing with it if it's not too deep. More power! Lol

I have been looking daily for posts about our tractors, I think the number of 16 and 17 series tractor owners are much smaller than that of other brands. It is always funny to read the Hydro vs. Power shuttle debate, I just can't jump in that discussion with a Dyna-QPS.

Can you explain the Dyna-QPS operation in more detail?

It is very similar to a power shuttle, foreward to reverse is with a lever on the dash, clutching optional. It has 3 ranges with 4 speeds in each range that are selected using a push button on the shift lever that can be switched on the fly. I have heard it described as a Hydro with a clutch interupter. I believe that the Dyna-QPS was discontinued with the 17 series tractors.

Ok .. so let's say you're in gear 5 and you want to stop. Do you still have to clutch and brake, or can you simply let off the throttle like with a hydro?

You have to either cluth and brake or take the shuttle out of foreward.

Ah ok ... I'd love the power of the 1660, but I really don't think the trans would work for me. I constructed about 6000 sqft of driveway the other day for a guy. Dug out the grass and dirt to about 4" below, added 40 yards of gravel. I did so much loader work and "back & forth" motions that I can't imagine having to use my left hand for anything other than steering (right hand was on the loader joystick practically fir 6hrs straight)

The Dyna QPS is a standard power shuttle transmission in terms of forward/declutch/reverse operation. All direction changes can be made with the shuttle lever and without using the foot clutch. Shifting gears inside each of the 3 ranges is done by pressing a button on the shifter, which briefly disengages the clutch, shifts the gears, and then reengages the clutch moving to the next gear. It does not work like a true powershift in a larger tractor where you can be running at full throttle with a heavy load or ground engaging implement and shift gears without slowing down at all. With the QPS if you are pulling it will almost come to a stop between gears while it shifts.
