Just something I've noticed about YouTube videos: So many times it appears that the operator is demonstrating a new product but doesn't have any experience with it. A person would think that after spending dollars to design a new product and put it on the market, they would want to "put their best foot forward".
An example would be the hydraulic controls where the operator is jerking the handles back and forth trying to figure out what does what and in what direction.
Anyone else noticed this lack of preparation?

Edit: I just noticed the hyperlink "hydraulic controls" above. Hilarious. I didn't do it. :)

Can't say I have noticed that. I can say that there are far too many videos that really don't serve much purpose. Everyone wants to be a star. I want to see something interesting or informative. Driving around your backyard in your (mass produced) "xyz" is neither.

It's like putting your home movies on youtube and few other people have ever been interested in that

It's no different than your local car dealers and merchants doing their own TV commercials, and they end up looking completely hokey and unprofessional. Everyone sees it but them.

Youtube is most dangerous place to learn anything... About 15% of the videos the person is actually doing something intelligently with proper equipment and education... The other 85% are amateurs, people who have managed to do something once (no matter how bad), managed to shoot video, and figured out how to uploaded it... Makes them instant expert... NOT...

When going to youtube you have to have your BS filter tuned to high.....

the other reviews, is more how to unpackage the item, and how many parts it has for 20 mins, or they talk about themselves for 10 mins and then show there idea the last 15 seconds of the video,

and many videos are more how to do this wrong, without the proper tools.

There is a guy on here who sells attachments and all his videos show a guy that is either completely clueless, or intentionally showing how to destroy a tractor while hoping you might think that makes their implement better. I don't get it, all I see is somebody acting like a fool and hoping nobody else does what he's doing.

I thought all the videos on YouTube were vetted so that there were only pros no cussing 🤬 or any content that would likely offend or possibly let anyone not have responsibility for their action removed. I can make two sheets of metal stick together with my welder so therefore I am a professional, the years of training and effort to learn a craft is over rated. (Sarcasm)

I don't mind the messick farm equipment on you tube. Seems like good info I don't watch comparison videos. Sooner go to the dealer and compare myself.

"On here" as in on TBN or as on Youtube?

If newbies like me don't know who he is, there is the risk that we might be following his advice.

Here on TBN. He posts videos of an employee testing their latest attachment, and the guy is completely out of control. I don't remember the name of the company, but I'm pretty sure they are a paid vendor with permission to sell their products on TBN.

Your BS filter broken?

Dale

Not knowing exactly to what videos Eddie is referring, I don't know if I have seen any of them. Perhaps I saw one or two and did identify them as BS and immediately blotted them from my memory. Perhaps I haven't seen any.

The main thing is that I am man enough, and humble enough, to admit that I don't know everything. Even if I do have a working BS filter, as a tractor newbie I might be fooled by someone talking on a subject about which I know very little, as might other newbies.

I think he’s referring to Ted at EA?
Everyone knows Ted abuses his implements to the limit to show that they can take a little abuse from the average guy. He even says so. There is no other way to show potential buyers why they should spend a little more for his equipment vs. foreign made stuff.
It is very effective marketing and he has VERY satisfied repeat customers.

I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean NPALEN..
I get emails ALL THE TIME about, "I watched the video on how to rebuild my pump & now it doesn't work"..
The diesel injection pump videos should ALL be taken down.!!
I watched a vid. of a fella rebuilding his Super Oliver 77 inj. pump..{Steve something} it was about 120 video series..
I THOUGHT it was a joke video at first & emailed the guy & told him so..{after 3 episodes}
He had no experience or clue, but decided to film it for the world to see..?? {and follow}
He did end-up using my name in a few episodes and I had to ask him to stop doing THAT..
I didn't want my name ANYWHERE NEAR that mess.
They were mostly corrections.. but still..
& all he HAD TO DO was buy a manual off ebay for 35.00 that would have "walked him" thru it.!!!
A very small price to pay inorder to, not look like a fool..
& the guys "turning-up" the fuel.. Turning the wrong screw, calling the part by the wrong name.. changing parts that have NO effect on power AND posting a link on where to BUY the part..
..it makes me cringe..

I think you have a lot better chance of figuring out how to make something work on youtube than by reading an owners manual nowadays, even with all the knuckleheads on there. Most electronic devices dont even come with manuals anymore and when they do their usually worthless.

Thanks, 3Lfarms

I had seen some of Ted's videos but never really formed an opinion about them. My tractor needs don't include most of the attachments he sells, so I simply moved on.

You have a point, but I'd still rather see a written-out step by step (with photos as needed) than a jerky cellphone video narrated by someone where every third word is "uh", but maybe I'm just old school.

When I have car issues that I think I might want to tackle myself, I'll start hunting through the u-tube videos and watch a bunch of them. That way, you can usually get a pretty good idea of what to expect, and even see the problems that people run into. Then, just like on-line recipes, combine several videos to get the best picture of the issue.

Case in point, my in-law's Mercury Marquis had a bad power window. I just bought the motor, thinking I'd try that first, and if that wasn't it, buy the actuator. They sell the motor, or the actuator, or the entire motor and actuator already assembled..... well, I watched a couple videos of just the motor change, took it out, and the actuator spring went BOING! Watched some more videos, and found that it's just easier to buy the whole thing already assembled, drill out the rivets in the glass, and put it all back. So, it pays to watch many of the videos, as you'll probably catch something the other guy missed.

I got pretty good at that window repair, as my kid has a Mercury Sable, and it's basically the same thing. So it now takes me about 15 minutes to remove the door skin, the moisture barrier, drill out the rivets, remove the old actuator/motor assembly, reinstall it all and off you go! I've replaced several on those two cars over the years now.

I've done a few videos myself, but just for fun and informational, and not purporting to be educational at all.

I agree about people without a clue posting videos, most often hand held 90deg off angle, and shaking like a drunk in DTs.

However, I believe that YouTube is an invaluable resource for learning things. You can't take everything at face value, but I have learned so many new things and/or avoided doing things that I would have. Of all the things on the Internet, I would miss YouTube and some forums the most.

I've learned to fix many things on my cars/trucks via YouTube. 1A Auto makes GREAT videos for basic car repair. There are Many others. You just get a LOT of chaff in the grain and YOU have to be smart enough to ignore those videos. I've developed a pretty good YouTube filter and can usually tell early in the video that its not worth my time.

AND I HATE THOSE **** UNBOXING VIDEOS!!! I mean... come on... how did that ever become a 'thing'?
