Good information....again!

I hadn't thought about getting a map of the hot spots. Good idea! We have a map of the coverage area for our cell phone provider, so I should be able to overlay the two maps and see where they overlap (or don't overlap). If the coverage is really good, that may just affect our decision some. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

When you use Yahoo Maps there is a Icon for Wi-Fi just below the map displayed. When clicked on, the screen will fill with all the Hot-Spots for that area. Each one will display information on where the Hot-Spot is. I have used it with good success.

I believe I may have just thought of the easiest/cheapest solution.

Hmmm. You're traveling and want to keep up with TBN. Let's see, there's currently 17,429 TBN members. You can keep up with TBN by visiting each of us. You're more than welcome to connect to my network so you can make arrangements to the next members location.

I also have a very challenging golf course for you to try but you may have to strap a few more HP onto Funbuggy to get through the hills and woods. (That's all my course is... hills and woods but I'll take my PHD and dig some holes for you to try to get to).

As has already been mentioned be prepared to use different ways to hook up. I have used Dial-up, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi while on the road. The only one I have not used is Sprint and AT&T wireless. The $70 a month charge has stopped me. Many hotels have Free or Complementary Wi-Fi or direct hook to the Internet. One of my task in the next 2 weeks is to call any hotel that I'm going to be staying at to verify that they have Free high speed hookup in the motel room. I love rollover cellphone minutes.
Before you retire and shut everything down. You may want to look into Internet Phone. One of it's great features is you can hook it up to any high speed connection and use your current phone number almost anyplace in the world.
I have AT&T. They are the only one that would transfer my current phone number to their system. I have it setup to dial my cellphone if there is no answer on the main number. Since I use my Cellphone for all long distance calls the service only cost $19.95 a month. Another feature is it will e-mail all your voice mails to your email account.
Retirement will be great. I have one complaint. It took about 3 months after retirement to get all the little stuff ready so we can travel without worrying if all our personal things will be taken care of while we are on the road. You know like $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Hi Gary et al,

You might want to check the current issue of PC Magazine. They have a long feature story on broadband, including Wi-Fi. Might offer more solutions. (I tried to find a link, but the PC Mag web site is just cramming buy offers down my throat; I read the paper copy).

I am in the same market -- looking for exactly what to use on the road. Seems that new options appear almost daily. So, whatever you decide, don't sign up for a loooong contract.

You know I think the mobile satellite connectivity package may be your best option.

- the need to maintain hot spot maps will be irrelevant
- the need to watch your billing will be irrelevant and
- some providers will allow a signal for HDTV

Startup costing may be an issue, but I have done a quick peek on the net and found packages for under 3000.00 US.
I am sure a more detailed search can cut that number down further.

Introduce a wireless router and you have a mobile network more than one person can share.
