Widening a Snow blower (not wings)

Yes it can be done and another member here started a thread on how he did it. Cost wise, I don't think it was too expensive. What he did was make two cuts and added equal amounts to each side. I know he just spliced in sections for the auger that he had a local shop make up. If you own a plasma cutter it would be real easy. It does seam to be a summer project though. I bet if you're motivated you could do it in a weekend but if you ran into an issue you could be without a blower for a few days if you were to do it in the winter.

Where did you get the yellow sticks? Nice job.

They are plow markers:thumbsup:
Easily picked up at any atv supply, they bolt on snow plows...inexpensive and they help define edges in deeper snow when cutting drifts (not that I've seen any of that this winter:mad:)

Thanks:)

Material costs about $500

Looking at the blower it is all flat pieces of 3/16 mild steel plate

I've got the equipment and know how to do

I would finish the winter as is and modify in the spring or summer

As a summer project when you can take you time, will be well worth it. Take a close look at the auger. I'm thinking you could cut it in the middle, slide tubing inside it to keep it straight then extend it and add some flighting. Ave even more. Who knows maybe enough to invest in one of those Cold Saws to do nice smooth job of cutting the sheet metal.

Did you take into consideration that you will have to replace the shaft that comes out of the gear box to run the auger. And what about the auger shaft. It is easy to shorten a shaft but is verry unsafe to lengthen a shaft unless done properly. I have seen the damage a lengthened shaft can do when it fails. It is not pretty.

Yes,

$500 includes the new shafts and augers from the 63" version of my 51"

I plan on disassembling the shafts and augers

Use plasma to make cuts through the blower (on each side of fan) and then add 6" plates to both sides. Prime, paint and install new shafts and augers from 63" blower

Here's my problem

Front blower 51"

Rear blade 60"

4.5" overlap/spoil on back per side

Was thinking about wings but...

Has anybody ever widened a blower? I was thinking of just buying the front shafts+augers and widening the working width to 63"!

I called the dealer for a 63" blower and even with trade in of 51" it's still $2500!!

This is for a kubota b2920

Hello Eric,

It will be simpler and less costly for you to fabricate the wings now using 1/4 inch plate making the segment for the side wall s the same size as the side walls and drilling a hole in each piece large enough to allow you to change the bearings if needed with what ever tools you need to change them.

And then brace each wing well with pairs of stand off bracing using one inch square tubing pairing each brace to a large mating plate bolted to the sidewalls of the snow caster to support the side walls and reduce the stresses and the possibility of binding the cross auger support bearings to near zero on the side walls of the snow caster.

In this way you can also bolt slick sheet material from Horn Plastics to the wings to aid in the snow entering the cross augers.

Just be sure to add a bent cutting edge of plate bolted to to the wing to break up the snow and it will make it easier to use the wings cutting straight walls of snow at the same time.

I bought a 76" John Deere blower for my tractor. It was used but in good shape; cost me $750 (in Canada).

Why not buy a bigger used unit and keep the smaller one as a back up unit?
