widows 10

I've come to the conclusion after two weeks of Win10 (still buggy) that they are slow to give developers the tools to create apps for MS, so they can reap billions selling thier penny apps. I had a 2TB wireless server driver off my wireless router that Win10 would not recognize. It seems if it doesn't have the MS brand it doesn't work very well. I had the Win10 professional version. MS allows you to revert back to Win7 within 30 days or your screwed. Beware though and do a total backup because what Win10 removes during an upgrade, it doesn't put back totally. I'll wait a while till it becomes a bit more friendly to existing programs and more vendors jump on board. Win10 is trying to corner the market just as Apply has and holding back code to assure security. So my evaluation is to wait a bit longer. The current Win10 is still considered Beta (work in progress) and if you've installed it you will get a regular dose of updates almost daily.

The only problem I incurred was with my Canon Lazer printer.

Email to Canon suggested a generic driver that did work after a few attempts.
Cannon did say a specific driver was in the works to be released in December.

This is my exact problem with Win10. They where slow to get developers of existing software to tools to keep up withb the ongoing Beta of Win10. So back to 7.

I never had a problem with Vista either but I'm not a Tech geek.

I read an article the other day that said MS might just force everyone to upgrade at some point. The cost of supporting older versions of Windows is greater than giving Windows 10 away for free. So for now at least the dialog box gives you a chance to postpone/decline but that may not be the case in the near future.

...every Windows user should keep a bootable Linux disk on hand...

And your personal phone number because 99.9% of Windows users don't have any idea what you just said really means! :)

I tend to want to slap just about everyone in my wife's family that keeps giving grandma technology and telling her to call ME if there's a problem. Hey, you gave it to her, you support it.

Same here, in fact mine is peppier> turns on/off faster

It takes a little getting used to and there were daily updates for the first couple of months, there are fewer now...I like it fine

James, maybe you and Moss are just too handy!!!! Sometimes it pays to play stupid. :D

Course that only works for a few minutes, then our "get it done" personalities kick in and we end up doing it anyway.......

Sorry...but I do think it's a good thing to have a way to use a computer should 'Windows' fail...and it's truly quite easy to get access to Google etc. and or a web mail site with a dead 'Windows' PC if you have a "live CD/DVD/USB drive" on hand...the system will run from the CD/DVD and the memory only...it will not affect the hard drive in any manner...
...Different is not necessarily bad... and REALLY all you have to do is inset the disk or thumb drive and start the machine...!

As for tech support for technology...in my experience it's not us geezers that called upon as often as the grand or great grand (wiz) kids do...!

When it comes to assistance there is no more friendly community than the "Windowless" (Linux) community...

FWIW to anyone interested...visit:DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. and do a little reading...

down on the right is a list of the most popular "distributions" (think windows versions) by date...most of the "distribution" links offer screenshots of the desktop etc...all are available for 100% free download...including versions for USB thumb drives...or have links to purchase more robust versions on DVDs for costs (usually about $6 for a disk and about $15 for a USB drive)...

Microsoft's ultimate goal is to dump operating systems as we know them and makes Windows a SERVICE. Then the consumer won't own the OS and they'll have to pay monthly, annually, etc... for the service, like your cell phone. That'll be a peach.

I think you're right on that. It's already happening with Office 365, it costs like 40 a year to keep it. Once it times out on this tablet I'm using right now I will be switching to something like Openoffice.

BTW, seems the last patch that went on my old Thinkpad with Win 10 screwed up a video driver. It now comes up with a blank blue screen. I can eventually get it into Windows with some reboots, seems I need to load an older driver for it to work properly. Gotta love forums.

Subscription is what Adobe is starting to do with their products. Acrobat (PDF creator/editor) online/'cloud' version $15/month or, for now, you can still buy the 'desktop only' versions but some features are only available with the cloud version. I had an old version that worked across Win2k and XP but stopped working with Win7. $15/month for something I might use 2-3 times per year? No thanks, time for work-around/other products.

I was using am old small notebook running XP. It could not be upgraded and I was having problems. Two weeks ago.....ordered a Dell 3542 from Wally World. It has a Core I3 processor and came with Windows 10. A friend helped me set it up.....he is very pc savy. Aside from the learning curve......the laptop and 10 are great. I really like the features in 10......very easy to use. BTW......the Dell cost was $319 plus tax on sale. Wally World put the same laptop on a special sale a few days ago.......$299. I called them last night.....they have already processed a credit for $20 due to their price match policy. Going out now to fall some trees.........that has nothing to do with this topic but thought you'd want to know.

That will be the day I switch to Linux.

Create what you want in Word and save it as a PDF. Not sure if the free office programs will do it too but MS Office has had it for awhile. I don't need the latest.

I have two laptops running XP, a Vista in the living room, and have Windows 10 on my main CPU in the house and my barn laptop. No real issues... seems like a fine operating system so far. Of course, you have to look around and find stuff until you train yourself.... sort of like the new atomic alarm clock I bought for the bedroom. Or, when they move something from where ' it is supposed to be ' at the Wally. Teething pains...... I was always a DOS guy, and was dragged kicking and screaming into Windows....... [ but, I still have a flip phone.. ] :)

FWIW...
No user actually owns an operating system (or any software for that matter unless you write it yourself or provide for in a commissioned contract etc.)...all one owns is a license to use said O/S, software...
This is why the news stories have been cropping up about not really owning a tractor or even an automotive vehicle...i.e., just owning/leasing a license to use...
