I've a kill permit and 410 shotgun. Have taken out over 30 of them in the last 15 years here.

We have lived outside of town for 22 years now. I think I have hit 5. Only one did any serious damage. I usually drive no faster than 45mph at night.

We have them everywhere around here. Nothing at all to see 5 or more dead in the late fall along the road just running 5 miles to Wal-Mart. Often I can pass 3-5 in my lane going out to the mail box if it is around dusk. Most of our small trees are fenced, the garden has a 8' fence around it, heck looks like I am starting a plant prison due to the Whitetail deers.

When we lived in Virginia I made the drive between Vienna (northern VA) and Northumberland County often. This time of year there could be dead deer by the roadside every few miles. Never hit one though. Tried to avoid highway driving in the evening or early morning.

Took one out with my Beemer in 2013. Broken shoulder blade, collar bone, fourteen ribs, punctured and collapsed lung and more black/blue than not. Lucky I wasn't wearing a beanie or I'd have no left ear. Took out the windshield and top foot of the fairing, writing off the bike. Deer wasn't so lucky. All this at a little less than 80KPH (50 mph).

Yet to hit one sure come close tho,first deer I see it's deer 2 or 3 the surprise.

Someone hit one on our road. I happened to be out in the yard and heard the hit. Lady stopped and looked at her car. It was still in a driveable condition so she left. I went out into the bean field and found the deer. Still alive. DNR said I could not shoot it with my pistol. County Police had to come out with a shot gun (I don't own one). Thankfully they also had someone that could use the meat come out and take it.

I just was amazed the lady who hit the deer did not care about the deer. I was pissed it had to suffer another 20 min or so that it took me to call DNR and for County to get out there. I thought it would be a lot longer than that... but still.

Devil's advocate here:

Do you know she didn't call?
Isn't it perfectly legal for her to drive away?
If the issue is about doing the right thing versus doing what is legal, why did you let it suffer for 20 minutes?
I don't think the deer would notice a difference if you had ended its pain with a pistol versus a shotgun.
What did you expect her to do?
