Wife hit another hooved rat

About 10 years ago my cousin and his son were running a logging truck (son owned it). Fully loaded it was 160,000 lbs, they each drove 12 hrs per day. They were hitting deer and breaking lights etc.

They had my Uncle on my mother's side install a deer guard. Good idea, in 1 1/2 years they hit 53 deer.

Out here I just make it a point. I do not drive before sunrise or after dusk. Unless there is a REAL need. Deer are hard to see and quick. It's bad enough in the broad daylight. Especially now that there are also large bands of wild turkeys all over the country. You should see what a large tom turkey does to the front of a car going 45mph.

The year we lived in Glennallen, AK. The long haul ALCAN drivers would over-night in Glennallen. Caribou are really stupid. You would see a herd of 45 to 60 standing in the roadway. You slow down - giving them time to exit. They don't exit. You have to stop - honk your horn - rev your engine - shout. They will exit when they are darn good and ready.

Many of the truckers would just motor on thru the herd. Killing many - injuring many more. I've seen many semis where the front is covered in blood and body parts. Then the height of stupidity. The remainder of the herd comes back out on the roadway and stands next to their dead comrades. An act designed to protect the fallen - ??? Who knows.

In Oz, many vehicles have Roo catchers. They'd work on those hooved rats we have.

Got the 2nd estimate back: just shy of $2,000. First one, the guy did a rather awful job with mainly a few camera shots: near $3,000. Going for a 3rd estimate tomorrow. At the last 2 places, we've a number of recommendations of both.

The first place was good until the guy retired, and Patterson bought him out.

My wife often has to stop in the mornings for the hooved rats just standing in the road. She needs to carry a small, sawed off, 410 with buck shot in it. Fire from the car window. Of course, it's illegal.

I hit an emu once in a work car, it was a write off, it's like hitting a 3' bowling ball on stilts then being engulfed in the contents of a feather mattress, biggest problem is that they are almost invisible until they move and they just strut out in front of you.
