Wind and solar have been around for a long time. Far longer than the oil/coal type plants.

We installed 15 kw of solar panels at our home 3 years ago and have been absolutely pleased with our experience. They generate enough electricity to power our home each month. Any excess is fed back into the local grid and is sold by the utility to our neighbors. The utility is only required to pay us wholesale rates for the surplus when we sell our home and/or disconnected our service. Our only maintenance has been a seasonal washing of pollen and dust.

Just remember your neighbors paid for a big part of that system, not you! You are welcome. HS

I have stood out in the middle of wind farms near my house, in eastern Iowa, and south central South Dakota I have yet to hear noise from the windmills. I hear wind, I hear cars on roads, I hear lots of birds and other things but not the windmills. Where does this thing about noise come from? I have been standing within 200 ft of the tower and there is nothing on the ones I have been around.

The only issue I have against windmills is their economic viability. Without government subsidies there would not be many built. The other big issue is distribution - where there is lots of wind - think plains states - there is not a lot of consumption and typical electrical transmission loses about half the energy it transmits every 1000 miles. Nobody in this country wants ultrahigh voltage transmission so the transmission losses continue.

Neighbors paid for a big part of the grid system too (perhaps more) and will continue to pay for the expansion (dams, transmission lines, nuclear plants, coal burning, petrol-burning, and windmills too). Those who buy their your own eqpt are funding infrastructure expansion, a benefit to "the neighbors" in several ways.

Perhaps most important to the consumer, the electric utilities are forced to be competitive with rates. Because if they charge too much then people will pursue other methods to get power, or reduce their usage.

Currently there seems to be enough fat to pay lobbyists to your gov't to make it harder for consumers to gather their own power. Also theres enough fat there to fund marketing schemes that spread confusion on the matter (radio, TV, forums etc). If there's enough money to pay for lobbying & marketing that ought to tellya something!

Sodo . You can run with the cospiracy story if you want . I can't see why however . The oil companies are not stopping the Almighty from adding new elements to the periodic table. To make solar cells or new batteries lighter, smaller, cheaper, more reliable and safer. We have the batteries, solar cells and electrical conductors we have because they are all there is to work with.

The greenies have their own propaganda. There are sound scientific facts to back up all side of the arguments to a point. Beyond that is mere speculation. I personally don't think either side is "right" in 90% of their claims. I think anyone who sides one way or the other is mostly close-minded. There should always be a "happy medium" but too many lunatics are in charge screaming "my way or the highway" and shooting for the extremes. There are simply too many actual unknowns to say who is right and who is not. Results of scientific studies are not always facts, they're simply results. People (even scientists) tend to fail to make that distinction.

Here's some propaganda for you: it doesn't matter what we do or don't do as a people, we're doomed. All we can do is do our best in our own lives with the situations provided to us...

You can call it a conspiracy, but its just marketing, lobbying and operating within the bounds of what the citizens tolerate. This is how its all done nowadays. Huge wealth can be generated by manipulating government. Which is always easier if citizens are distracted or confused and certainly while they are divided.
