windows 10

Was there a trick to it, or did it just start working?

I'll have to admit that I'm not sure. For a couple of hours it showed "still working on it" so maybe it just did. However, I went to my Google account and opened the gmail there and it started working everywhere.

Re: How To Stop Windows 10 From Spying On You

Upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10. Time from start to finish 1 hour 4 minutes using broadband. The jury is still out on how well I like it. But, it has got to be better than 8.1. Still think their best OS was XP.

THE JURY IS IN. I updated from 8.1 to 10 this morning and am sorry I did. As bad as 8.1 is, 10 is WORSE. Hard to believe, isn't it?

What is worse about it? Are you having problems? Tell us more.

It took me a long time to get 10 installed and working, and for a computer dummy like me, there's still some settings and adjustments to find and make, but even I think 10 is going to be better than 8/8.1.

Here's a possibly cynical question... Why is Windows 10 free? How is MS going to recoup the investment they've made in developing the software for this operating system.

Eight years ago I bought (my now deceased) computer with Windows Vista. In order to get Windows 7, I had to purchase it. My new system has Win8.1 and, with the help (+$100) of a 'little man from the village', I've got everything transferred from the old hard-drive. He's set everything up and instructed me on how to utilise 8.1. I like it now that I've recovered all of my old info.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think I'll wait a while before doing the download... the adage "There's no such thing as a free lunch" comes to mind.

Wagtail, I can certainly understand why you'd wait. I learned to use 8.1, but never really liked it. And I only personally know one living human being who claims to like 8. And I've read in the news (no personal knowledge) that the sales of new PCs are down. So I can understand a couple of reasons why Microsoft might want to get Windows 10 out there. So far, there are a somethings I like about 10 and some I don't, or maybe don't understand. I use Quicken 2013 and it's not as sharp and clear and image as it was with 8.1. I notice Quicken even suggests a couple of remedies for XP, 7, and 8.1 but don't mention 10 yet.

The jury is amending the verdict from "WORSE" to "NO BETTER THAN". Not much of an improvement.

What is wrong with it, eth555 asks? Well, for one the desktop images are constantly covered by the app icons, we put pics of the grandkids there. Also, you can no longer just right click on a picture and send it to the desktop. 10 just like 8.1 requires you to go to a slide show to see an image, remember when you were able to set up filmstrips and the like to see the image ala XP. Text sizes must constantly be adjusted, seemingly every time you open a new program. Our grandkids have all the gizmos, IPAD, IPOD, Smart phones and the like. We have a desktop and for a reason, we want to sit down and look things up or communicate with friends via email or play a game or two of solitaire. 10 seems to have been created for IPAD, IPOD Smart Phone use. We will never use 75% of the applications it contains. Call me old fashioned or just plain old, but XP was a program I enjoyed.

It took just over one hour to download, it will take me weeks or months to correct, adjust, tweak, delete, remove all of the glitches in this OS that we will never use or that just plain frustrate us to the point that we will simply never open them.

One good thing, always end on a positive note they say. That irritating pop up side bar gizmo has been eliminated.

Win 10 is free because MS will recoup the cost through the data they collect from you and sell to marketers in advertising that will be forced onto your screen.
I have decided I will reject the free download. From what I have read there is nothing good coming from this update.

While no one on TBN has inside knowledge, I imagine, Microsoft never directly charged the end user enough to recoup their costs. Microsoft made their money from manufacturers who bundled Windows on their PCs versus people who upgraded the OS on an existing PC. Additionally, in some situations, MS is charging for Windows10. Why is it free? In my opinion, it's an effort to get more people on the same version of the OS. Windows8 was a disaster and a lot of people stayed on Win7, particularly corporate customers. Win8.1 was a band aid, which did not convince many people to leave Win7.

Win10 cleans up the Win8.x mess on both PCs and tablets.

As a frame of reference, Apple typically doesn't charge for OS upgrades, or they charge a nominal amount. So, upgrades you're not charged for (they are not 'free', someone, somewhere, at some time pays for it) are not unusual.

If they attempt to recoup via 'forced advertising', people will reject Win10 and there will be a crop of programs created to block this.

IMO, upgrades are not 'good' or 'bad', rather the product either meets your requirements or it doesn't. I have never understood the 'anger' some people have around a vendor or operating system. Have a Windows tablet, e.g., Surface 3, you should upgrade. Have a PC/laptop without a touch screen? Maybe Win10 is not for you.
