I use my home computer for things like quicken, word, excel, powerpoint, pictures, video, autocad, etc. Most are not available for linux nor do I want to use the knock off "almost like it" apps. I use linux at work, it has it's place, but not for home use for most people.

No offense but you come across like a typically "cut their PC teeth on a Windows machine" user...may not be the case but it's more common than not for those with similar comments to yours..."most people" were first exposed to the Windows interface and the MAC to a lessor extent so it's only natural that anything different is just not "natural" (for lack of a better word) to them...
...Just curious what (Linux) interface do you use "at work"? CLI, GUI ??

As for the "knock off...almost like it apps" ...most of the data processing/manipulating programs you refer to (that were (namely) developed for the Win O/S) are actually "knock off" applications that were taken from UNIX/Linux programs...including autocad etc.,etc...

I retired from a career centered around Unix-based programs designing microprocessors for Intel. Just because it's efficient doesn't make it a joy to use. Solaris (Sun's version of Unix) had its place but any program that we didn't have to run in that environment we immediately switched over to a Windows emulator (Hummingbird) to run. Eventually, almost all CAD programs used in chip design at Intel were ported over to the Windows environment. Aesthetics and convenience has always been important to me, even at the cost of efficiency, especially for home use where enjoyment is paramount.

I installed Windows 10 Sunday (8/2/2015), and one minor unsolved problem for a couple of days has been that the top right hand 3 keys on my keyboard (end, page up, page down) no longer worked in the browser. Now this morning, for reasons unknown, they work just fine.:laughing:

I have programmed in APL. Got the program down to one line too.

We used to have 3270 terminals with APL characters but those are long gone....

I aint old though.

Our 1st "PC" at L&F was an Apple that used two floppy drives - no hard drive.

Then we had IBM PCs running Visicalc, again on a two floppy system. We were real excited when we got one with a hard drive and upgraded to Lotus 1-2-3. With DOS.

Anyhow, I see no reason for me to upgrade to 10 from 7. It seems most software changes are for bells and whistles to entertain our short-attention-span millennials. Or change for it's own sake.

We'll up grade my MIL's machine cuz she and my wife hate Windows 8. I guess we'll have to do it here since she has dial-up :laughing:

First windows that i remember using was xerox star. then ms dos windows which was just a gui interface. before ms dos there was dr dos, and others.
Used to use os2 before i ever had windows. i finally started using windows because thats where the apps are. first cad i used was mainframe based, not sure what os. It migrated to dos then windows.

I use linux at home, but not often. windows is just practical for what i want to do.

Now I don't even know what an APL ball is (well, I guess I do know; just didn't know what it was called), because . . . . many years ago (about 1967) when I was a young patrolman and quite happy out there in my squad car, the dispatcher came on the radio one day to tell me to report to the captain's office. The captain's secretary had been promoted to another higher paying city job and his clerk typist had resigned. So they'd gone through personnel files and found that I could type. Now I had taken typing in high school on a manual typewriter, then I'd bought an electric Penncrest (Smith-Corona) just before I joined the Police Department. But the captain's office had an old worn out IBM Selectric that I hated. And everything had to be typed with no errors and sometimes included up to 6 "onionskins". How many remember those? I was sure glad when he hired another secretary.

I still miss the old DOS system when it ran off of two large floppy discs. :laughing:

Remember when you had to hit cd/ to change the directories and open a file in each one and how noisy the machine was when it would turn the disc round and round. :confused2:

I go back to 1980 when I was in charge of opening new Tandy computer repair centers on the West coast. To fix computers you first had to determine if the problem was hardware or software and to do that you had to know the software. I was trained in most of the existing OS's at the time, this is pre-MS-DOS: NewDOS, dos+, LDos, TRSDOS, SteveDOS (yes, there was an OS called SteveDOS), CPM (pickles and trout) and finally, machine language.

For those of you who can't think of a reason to leave Windows 7, I ask you: don't you find it aggravating when you click on a directory to expand the sub-directories only to watch them scroll off the screen? That was one of my pet peeves. There are other good reasons to switch but I'll stop it here.

I'm having second thoughts about upgrading. Many are saying Windows 10 should be classified as SPYWARE. The most egregious example of that is a new feature (on by default) called Windows Update Delivery Optimization (WUDO [should be called voodoo]) that uses your computer's internet connection to secretly distribute M$ updates. Think about it, they are stealing your bandwidth (that you pay for) to send their updates!!! OUTRAGEOUS :thumbdown: Some things never change, because of arrogant chit like this, is it any wonder why so many people hate M$?!

I have Win7 pro. Will the free upgrade to Win10 also be pro or will I get stuck with some home version?

The 3270 terminal was TR connected as well. Well, one was, the other one was some sort of coax type of connection. The first time I knowingly used a APL application was on an acoustic dialup line using an IBM PC. But PC was not PC. :shocked::confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing: PC meant PORTABLE computer not PERSONAL. Twas a PC 5100, that had a tape cartridge for storage, 64K of RAM with BASIC AND APL in firmware. The PC had a B&W itty bitty monitor. It was portable if you could lift 50-60 pounds! :laughing::laughing::laughing:

When I programed APL, well, I can't remember what terminal I used. It might have been a VT100 connection which would have been odd or maybe over a teleprinter terminal. I just can't remember. :laughing::laughing::laughing:

What this means for a Windows 10 user is that the OS will periodically download free updates on one device via the internet and then share those updates with other Windows 10 machines on your network.

I like that part of it, but by default, it will also share them on the internet.
