Guess it depends on what you need it for.

My IT person recommended the Office 365 because of the auto updates. With all the cyber crime going on, can’t risk having old versions or outdated programs.

Again … to each their own.

I use Office 365 for both home and business, as did my prior employer. Nothing wrong with it.

It does try to steer you to save everything on one drive, but the "other location" and "browse" buttons are always there, so no issue. And unless things have changed real recently, that annoyance isn't unique to the 365 variant of Office.

You can also completely disable and stay logged out of OneDrive. Of course easiest for the folks who switch to 'local only' Windows user accounts, which I've always done on all computers. You still need an MS account for some things, such as the MS app store, but you don't need to have it tied to your Windows user profile.

Disable one drive in Startup Programs, and you can even go into Windows Services and disable it there. If you do this, Office and other Microsoft apps will still try to get you to save to OneDrive, but it will be actually only saving to a local directory. OneDrive works by saving files locally and syncing with the service, to manage network outages, so if you disable the service it just stays local. The location is cryptic and not easy to find, so it's usually best to manually move them to your preferred location when this happens, or just open and re-save where you want.
