Well, yes "they" did. They simply recanted. I'm still not converting. I like to have a choice on my privacy. That's not possible with Win10 or now Win11.

As a side note; I stopped running the Microsoft Updates when "they" tried to hammer my software and change my boot option. I still lost some Media Center functions. And they continued to try and delete my "Host" file.

Last year I spent a month trying to switch from Windows to Linux. Unfortunately right now Linux is an incomprehensible hodgepodge that most non-technical folks can not grasp.

Ok, that confirms what I experienced 20+ years ago pre-Windows as I described above. I was comfortable with command-line Dos, batch files, Novell setup, etc and editing the Wordstar binary to add features. The big limitation back then was you had to know precisely what you wanted before you started keying in commands because you were working blind. There was zero feedback if you didn't do exactly what the OS expected, just endless failure while you tried everything you could imagine. The rare, sparse documentation by nerds was near useless for the un-initiated.

Your 'incomprehensible hodgepodge' is an excellent description of back then. I see it hasn't changed much.

But things will be different if Windows dies. The demand for a user-friendly OS would be enormous and as a result central control/development by a large corporation is likely to happen.

Lets hope. LibreOffice is a success, Wikipedia too, and Firefox, these are user-friendly examples built on what volunteers created. Linux is a solid foundation but it's still user-hostile to the novice.

Weird, have a host file. I just checked and it's still there with my entries in it.

Microsoft Security Essentials scanner will try to remove all the entries if you run it. Found that out when ads started popping on various sites. Fortunately, I had the scan options set to "Quarantine" instead of delete and was able to recover all my hard work.

I also keep several backup copies now.

Wait a minute. The first MS-DOS was 1.25. BTDT. Sanyo MBC-550. One 5.25" single-side disk drive (160 KB).

It replaced my TRS-80.

Those are updates for MSE, not Windows itself. They're different. The only way you're getting security updates for Windows 7 is if you buy ESU, and the only people buying ESU are commercial customers needing to buy time to migrate critical systems to Win10.

Windows 10 was released 6 years ago. I know people are terrified of change but in the tech universe 6 years is a long time.

Yep, two different things.

At the office we just upgraded to Windows 10, build 20H2. Which basically fixes all the glitches in Windows 10. Now they're going to Windows 11, to then discover all the new glitches.

I wish they would stop improving things.

I think hardware failure on this old Win 7 laptop I leave at the ranch is a realistic risk. I see the HD 'health' shows 43,635 hours. I bought this business-class laptop used, in 2014.

I carry a USB drive between here and home containing a second copy of anything - photos etc - that I would be concerned to lose.

Evil intruders, not so much. I'm trying to remember the last time I had to clean up a mess. I think it was about 2003 when I and the ranch cabin tenant shared a DSL line and she installed Cursor Capers or something that migrated to me. Just silly cursors, nothing critical. I re-configured network settings to Public (shut out everybody). No problems since. But I don't click on strange down-the-rabbithole sites.

UBlock Origin shows 17 somethings (links?) blocked at this moment, 300k since it was installed.

Thanks for the link. Never heard of ReactOS before. If Microsoft decides to start charging a subscription fee, I'll investigate ReactOS and Linux as viable replacements for Windows 11.

Pray tell, why do they want to make Windows "more Mac like"? Mac has what, a 7% market share while Windows has a market share in the 80s.
If I wanted a Mac I'd buy one.

I went looking for React OS and development doesn't seem to be moving fast over the past 15 years. It seems to be pre-XP in expectations and that isn't half done.

I saw claims of no support for NTFS or 64 bit hardware. At best, a 'sandbox' environment for a limited application, maybe an cash register or something.

I was hopeful ...
