Macs are rarely attacked by viruses or hackers. (Have I crossed the line from zealot to troll?)

Nah... nothing wrong with a Mac. I used to have one and still wish I did use them. Had to finally give in and join the rest of the masses so that I could work from home occassionally. Heavy sigh..... /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

The problem is that the world has grown too darn dependent on the PC solution - no matter what OS they prefer. Throw a little factoid out - do you realize that a lot of telephone switches use Motorola processors. I was floored when I first got involved with telephone switches a few years back. One little 68020 or 68030 processor controlling thousands of telephone calls a second!! The same processor that powered the MacIntoshes. What a hoot!!

Office XP, of course, will not work on a Mac. But after M$ released Office XP they released a native version for Mac OX. No registering.

The emulation program, Virtual PC, that I mentioned in an earlier post will soon be released in a version that can run Windows XP. Since XP will be running on an emulated hardware interface, I dont know what they will do about registration.

Terry, it wasn't "pre-installed"; it was a packet of 6 CDs (MicrosoftWorks Suite 6.0) that I installed. Maybe I could "uninstall" it, install it again, and register; I'm not sure, but I do know it states definitely on Bill's web site that you only get one chance to register it, then forget it; can't be done. It has a few neat features, but like a lot of other products, the old 4.5 version was so much easier to use.

I believe they have released a version of Office XP for the Mac. I'll check with the wife, she's the marketing expert on this. All I do is install and use the stuff.

Oh, almost forgot, have to provide physical and mental support when things go wrong.

"My thingy doesn't frambulate anymore, what shall I do?"

"Oh-oh.... if I press the any key, will I lose all of my files?"

Got home and checked with the expert /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif, Microsoft Office:MAC it is called. It was released prior to Office XP. Same version - different packaging.
Edited by TerryinMD on 12/12/01 08:20 PM (server time).

Actually a different product. Not entirely the same; not entirely different. There are features/functions in the mAc version that are not on the PC version and vice-versa. They just recently ran a little article on this in the local paper (S.J. Merc), because most of the people that work on M$ Office:Mac are here in the Bay Area.

There has been a Mac version of Office for a long time. But the version written for native OS X was just released on Nov 20. Got mine just today, in fact. It is based on the most recent Windows version (XP, I assume), but is completely customized to the new Mac "aqua" GUI in OS X. Because it takes advantage of certain OS X capabilities, it supposedly has differences from XP.

I thought long and hard about whether I wanted to "register" in the old-fashioned sense, fearing it was some trick. However, there was no sign of the new-fangled lock to the cpu. The product registration did require me to get a so-called Passport account, which seems primarily a gaudy website gimmick to hawk MS products.

Got the full version of Office for only $199 at the Apple education store, using my college student son's name. Seems only fair for the billion dollars in tuition I have paid for 3 kids.

Put this is the rumor column. I got this off the network (Computergram; a British daily publication). These people pick up on a lot of rumors, not all of which are true, but their batting record is quite good. Take this with a grain of salt:

Has Al Qaeda Infiltrated Microsoft and Windows XP?

Section: 80. International News

By Gavin Clarke

A suspected member of ***** bin Laden's Al Qaeda terrorist network claims a terrorist cell infiltrated Microsoft Corp, and attempted to sabotage the company's recently launched Windows XP operating system.

Mohammad Afroze Abdul Razzak, arrested by Indian police on October 2, claimed that a member or members of Al Qaeda infiltrated Microsoft's Redmond, Washington campus posing as computer programmers. Afroze claimed attempts were made to plant trojans, trapdoors and bugs inside the operating system.

Afroze also told Indian authorities - under interrogation - that he was part of a team of Al Qaeda terrorists that planed to hijack an aircraft in London on September 11 and crash it into either the House of Commons or London's Tower Bridge. British intelligence officials have dismissed the claims.

However, Afroze also warned Indian police that Al Qaeda was planning an attack on India's parliament complex in New Delhi. Terrorists last week stormed the Indian Parliament with grenades and guns, killing seven and injuring at least 20 people. Microsoft called Afronze's comments "bizzare and unsubstantiated."
