Winter Gloves/Mittens?

   / Winter Gloves/Mittens? #41
When I went dogsledding in Ely, MN, in Jan the outfitter set me up with some warm gloves and some super mittens. The mittens have a strap just like little kids' have--run it up your sleeve, over your back, and down the other sleeve of your coat. They go most of the way up my arm. The strap is what makes them killer: when I need dexterity, I just pop them off and they dangle out of the way while I work with my gloves on. Then, I can slip my hands back in them for driving the tractor. They worked dogsledding and they worked plowing snow in our Post-Zombie-Apocalyptic Winter of 2008-2009.

The thing I found with my gloves is when I took them off the change shear bolts or something, they were tough to get back on with wet hands.

Nope...the liners keep you warm quite a while after the leather gets wet.

Also, the leather will dry out and be good to use.

Unlike a lot of leather that dries, shrinks and cracks

That's interesting, Nancy made me a pair of wool mittens from home spun, maybe I'll be able to get them in my gloves but I'll check out the Beans.

Bean used to be great but recently I've gotten some things from them that weren't the best.

I replaced my old canvas barn coat with the wool liner and it is still pretty good except the button thread is already coming apart. Boy, years ago if you got something from Bean it was bullet proof!

I was a ski patroler for many years here in MN. When I had to spend 6 hours outside at -20F (yes there are idiots that ski in those temps) I had to use mittens with the glove liners. This way you can still use heat packets inside the mitten and when you need to you can pull them off and have gloves.

I use neoprene gloves and a loose fitting mitten over them. The neoprene does a nice job keeping your hands warm but keeps your hands dry. You can do things like change shear bolts without taking them off. The mittens help keep warmth in but can easily be removed. But I also do things like spread sand by hand and it tends to get your hands wet without good gloves.

LL Bean is not the only place they have them.

In my area, there are a handful of shops that carry them, and for less than LL Bean.

Check out places in your area that are NOT big box or mall outlet type stores.

Usually the family owned type businesses that have clothing can get or have them.

Not places like TJ MAXX or Jos A Banks crap stores

For tough (but not necessarily stylish...unless you're into the 1930's and 40's styles) clothing, try Better Outdoor Clothing | Better Outdoor Gear | Filson.

I own both the hats pictured. Can't beat the wildfowl hat (tan one) for cold, damp days...had this one for a few years now.
The Mackinaw cap (green with ear warmer flaps) is new for me, but I reckon it'll be great for snow plowing and such.
Both made in the USA, BTW.

They sell quality gloves and mittens too, but I already have a great pair of gloves. My wife brought them from Wyoming 15 years ago...got 'em when she was working (as a trainee) in some kind of construction.

I like the wool one Roy, might pick it up and everyone here knows you're the hat authority!

Thanks for reminding me!
That's what I like about small towns. We have this store called Stewart's, been around forever and Mr. Stewart still runs it, he's in his 90's. We go in now and then to get all kinds of quality clothing.

I wear Snow Mobile Mittens when it gets real cold. I was able to stay out 4 hours plus on the tractor in them last year. My limit is my feet. I have tried everything but good wool socks followed up by regular socks and good boots.

I feel your pain! I too remember when my fingers and especially my toes were killing me when I plowed with an open tractor. Not anymore.

Ditto ! Gloves just make it more difficult to tune the stereo.
