The right to self defense is the right to use the force necessary to stop an attack that you reasonable believe could cause death or grievous bodily harm. It is not a right to kill.
Your intent must be to stop the attack......not to kill. If he happens to die as a result of your lawful effort to stop the attack, that is called a justifiable homicide. If your intent was to kill, it won't be justified and you will be charged with murder.
