Well, I did have a 2 rice cakes with some all fruit on it later. But with the total calories I can snack and not feel guilty. I'ts about 10:30 P.M. now and I'm not hungry.

I just found out today that Walgreens is now doing cholesterol testing (Well, at least the one in Bastrop, Texas) Cost is $35 if you want to know how your doing between Dr. visits.

Don,
I've just caught the last part of your good discussion on diet.
The cholesterol tests are easily effected by diet and what you drink.
Lots of water everyday really helps.

Ron it was really hard to stop cokes in the morning but now I get my morning fizz from seltzer water. Ingredients - Carbonated water.

Two other interesting topics: Eating with friends and eating out.

Later this month I'll share "Having Thanksgiving with a heart patient - Yuck or yummy?":D

Looking forward to reading about that!

Ate out last night at a BBQ restaurant: Veggie burger with lettuce, tomato & BBQ sauce for more flavor. Quite tasty, although I should probably omit the sauce.

My wife ran triglicerides in the 500-600 range for years and the other readings were way out of range too, even on statins. She hardly ever drank water but had a coke with lunch and supper every day.
Mine started creeping up but still well within range. I read somewhere about
how certain foods and drinks could blow the lid off the test. So I quit drinking anything but coffee and water for a couple weeks before the test and made sure I didn't eat any mayo on sandwiches. Brought mine way down.
My wife did the same restrictions for 4 days prior to her next test, drank water instead of coke, and all her readings came way down. Now she has become used to water and never drinks pop.
I told my doctor, who is a cardiologist, what I did, he gives me the test every 6 months because I had an elevated CRP a few years ago.
He said, yes no pop and no mayo along with a lot of other foods has a big
effect on the numbers.

Ron, were those diet cokes? Was it the sugar in the drinks or something else?

Real coke.
I later asked my doctor if he thought diet coke would be ok.
He said no because the carbonation is bad for bone structure.

Can you imagine the problems the young people today are going to have in the future from their preferred diets. Life expectancy may go the other way.

Are the frozen veggies you pictured salt and sugar free?
Do you like dried garlic cloves as a season?

The only ingredient is the vegetables in the frozen veggies.

I use garlic powder and fresh garlic, but have not used dried garlic cloves.

That's good. The folks that are interested in your diet for themselves need to be aware of what's available w/o salt and sugar.
I think I meant what you called fresh garlic. We buy 3-4 bulbs of it which has many, what we call cloves, that break off. Use it in salads and most other stuff. Tried to grow it in the onion patch a couple times from breaking off and planting cloves. It gew fine but didn't keep well. That's why I figure it is artifically dried some commercially.

You are right a bulb of garlic with sections is dried, I just think of it as fresh.

One way I learned to really cut back on salt is never cook with it. Your tongue
will pick up the salt more readily with a small sprinkle on the surface of prepared food. Use less and less salt and add salt substitutes and spices. Some other spices and flavor enhancers we uses are:

Mrs. Dash
Apple cider vinegar
rasins
hot sauce and salsas
celery seeds
Italian seasoning
basel
cumin
chili powder
balsamic vinegar and glaze
apple juice
lemon/lime juice
onions-fresh and powder
garlic-cloves and powder
cilantro
Braggs Liquid Aminos - for a smokey flavor
ground cloves
black pepper and cayenne pepper
