Back when,, Cub Cadet used to separate the diesel engine from the hydro to ease starting,,
I believe it was the same as a gear drive clutch,, but, used on the hydro,,
it was an option,,IIRC,,,

One advantage of the PT hydraulic tanks is that since they are structural members, the metal is relatively thick, which helps distribute the heat from a pad heater. If I were going to use a blanket, I would toss it over everything from the dashboard back. While it might be a little slower to heat everything, you would end up with a warm steering wheel and seat to start the winter chores. :):dance1:

As MR points out, the charge pump does run at full capacity all the time. The flow is needed to make up losses in the drive circuit, and to cool/lubricate the variable displacement pump. Pumping cold oil runs the risks of cavitation in the charge pump, causing premature wear, and also runs the risk of collapsing the prefilter. We all want to take it easy until the oil is warm. I can hear my pumps start to cavitate, if I crank up the throttle when the engine is cold (<40F) If you look up viscosity values, there is very little difference between 0W/5W/10W oils at low temperature; it is all pretty thick.

All the best,

Peter

Just saying I love the pnw. It got to 37 last night. Pt started right up

It was 15F here over the weekend. Clear and sunny days. Cold, but clear. I love this kind of weather. Ice is starting to form on the lakes. Maybe I'll get to go ice fishing before February!

To answer the question on why there's no clutch.

My guess: Chris and Terry have garages w/heat.

How about just slapping a magnetic block heater on the hydraulic tank a few hours before starting?

Just wondering what motor oil are you running.....I realize your concern with the hydro pumps:)

There must be another option. My old Hyster H50 forklift from the late 1950s has an electric clutch that is engaged by a microswitch on the parking brake, which is about all I know about the system as it hasn't broken yet (knock on wood). It also has a manual clutch/brake pedal, so that probably plays a part in the system too, but there is notably less load on the engine when the brake is set / clutch is disengaged. You can still use the vertical, tilt, and steer controls when the parking brake is set, so its not a complete disconnect, but it does share a hydraulic reservoir for whatever its worth.

It is probably a automatic transmission with a solenoid that puts it into "neutral" when the parking brake is on. That is how the forklifts at work are setup anyway.

Pardon my ignorance of your machine, but if it has a choke, have you checked to see that it closes completely? A number of cold weather users have found they get insufficient low speed jet flow and the choke not being completely closed. When readjusted, its a 3 second start.

Looking at my engine-mount-pto pumps picture below:

B1B6F867-F154-442D-8CE8-E02256EA564F.jpeg

I think the pump mount is mounted to the engine on the 7.75" bolt circle.
Then there's some coupling inside there (lovejoy or shaft? I do not know).
Then there's an SAE (number unknown) two-bolt mount that the pump mounts to.

I've not found any clutches that'll mount to the 5.625" or 7.75" bolt circles on this engine (if that is in fact the correct bolt circles, just using what I found so may not be correct, so don't go doing any research based on those numbers yet).

I have found clutches that will mount on SAE 2-bolt mounts.

That would add about 5-6 inches to the length of that installation, and won't fit.

However, if I could find a clutch that bolted directly to the engine an had an SAE 2-bolt mount on the other end, well, it appears that would be about the same length as the pump mount that's in there now.

Hmmmmm..... I wish I could find more specs on that Kohler mechanical pump assembly listed in the maintenance manual for reference.

Well if you all don't find an easy way to de/couple, maybe a multi grade synthetic hydro oil that meets spec for your machine might make life better:thumbsup:

Lot of work pumping Aunt Jamima when its cold out.
